There is not a single film on that entire list with the exception of Hail, Caeser that I've seen.

The only film in the major categories that I haven't seen is 20th Century Women (screenplay), and we'll be going next weekend.

Interesting that the Oscar nominations were announced so early in the year this year. Normally, they're not announced until after the Screen Actors Guild Awards, which will air this coming Sunday.

This year also sees the rare instance of lead and supporting Oscar nominees from an earlier film competing against each other in the same category. Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer (both nominated for The Help a few years ago) are competing for Best Supporting Actress. Viola has been getting all of the awards for Fences so far, so she has to be the favorite to win.

Also notable is that Aaron Taylor-Johnson, this year's Golden Globe winner for Best Supporting Actor, was not nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar... but his Nocturnal Animals co-star, Michael Shannon, was nominated in that category. That means the Best Supporting Actor Oscar is a free-for-all this year. I could see any of those five nominees winning.

And we can just move past the Best Actor and Best Actress nominations. They probably already have Ryan Gosling's and Emma Stone's names etched onto those statuettes.

3 of 9 Best Picture nominations are films about African Americans, 2 of 9 directors (assuming they are both American as well). Adding in all the best Actor/ess and supporting Actor/ess African Americans (again assuming they are all Americans, don't know) represent 10 of 38 nominations, or 26.3%

I've not seen but one of the films (Arrival) so I can't judge the validity of these nominations, especially against the other movies I did see (not very many and they would provide a low bar anyway). I really want to see Hidden Figures, Hacksaw Ridge, Lion, Moonlight, and Fences.

That is an impressive representation, over one and a half times the US population mix. Will there be protests that the representation is a handout (given the "black snub" of 2016) or will they accept the nominations as being deserved?

I will assume they will accept them as deserved, and I also assume they are deserved.

I have not seen Concussion yet, on my list but just never seems to fit the mood, but it HAS to be better than Mad Max: Fury Road. That was a terrible movie, IMO. I saw Bridge of Spies, Room, The Martian, The Revenant, and The Big Short. All fine films and all much better the MM:FR. Of those, I felt Bridge of Spies was the best overall. Still need to see Spotlight. Not sure if Brooklyn will ever make the cut. Maybe if my wife wants a romance movie.

Golden Globe nominations are often a joke, so I wouldn't put much stock in who did or did not get nominated. Michael Shannon gave by far the better performance and deserved the nomination.

Ryan Gosling has no chance at an Oscar; Casey Affleck will win. Emma Stone is favored, but I wouldn't be surprised at Isabella Huppert or Natalie Portman winning.

Viola Davis is a lock for supporting actress. Supporting actor is between Mahershala Ali and Lucas Hedges.

Fences and Moonlight would have received a bunch of nominations in any year. If they were made last year, they would have gotten nominated then and there wouldn't have been any controversy. Hidden Figures is the type of crowd pleaser that usually sneaks into one of the last Oscar Best Picture slots, but it might have been nominated last year as well. It was certainly comparable with The Martian and Bridge of Spies last year. The only actor who got, I think, a bit of a boost from the controversy was Ruth Negga for Loving. I think Amy Adams should have gotten a nomination.

I've not seen a single one of these nominees. I might need to get out more. Not happening any time soon.
