I'm surprised TMITSS didn't beat me to the punch on this one.

Author of the novel To Sir with Love, which became a highly popular Sidney Poitier movie in the 1960's featuring an equally highly popular title song. Braithwaite based the book on his own experience as a teacher in London in the 1950's. Before that, he was a fighter pilot for the RAF during World War II (he was from Guyana).
