RIP John Glenn

#1 Post by Estonut » Thu Dec 08, 2016 2:37 pm

From:
Former astronaut, US Sen. John Glenn of Ohio has died at 95

Former astronaut and U.S. Sen. John Glenn has died in Ohio. He was 95.

Glenn became a national hero in 1962 when he became the first American to orbit the Earth.

Hank Wilson with the John Glenn School of Public Affairs says Glenn died Thursday afternoon at the James Cancer Hospital in Columbus.

Glenn was the third U.S. astronaut in space and the first of them to get into orbit. He circled the Earth three times. The Soviet Union had put a man into orbit a year earlier in 1961.

Glenn then spent 24 years as a Democrat from Ohio in the Senate and briefly made a run for president in 1984. He returned to space in 1998, at age 77, aboard space shuttle Discovery.

He was the last survivor of the original Mercury 7 astronauts.

We don't make 'em like that anymore.

Damn. I just heard earlier today that he was ill. --Bob

Marine aviator, WWII and Korean War hero, test pilot, astronaut, Senator ... and game show contestant

I heard on the radio that Sen. Glenn appeared on Name That Tune in 1957, the same day that Sputnik was launched! In this clip, he's gracious and even jokes about it, though the radio said he wasn't at all pleased that the Soviets beat us to space.

If memory serves, Eddie Hodges was the original Winthrop in The Music Man.

There's more to the story. Meredith Willson's wife was a fan of the TV show and saw Eddie Hodges with John Glenn and thought he might make a good Winthrop (Meredith Willson was casting Music Man at the time). He contacted Hodge's family and suggested they audition. Glenn and his wife attended opening night of the musical.
