60. ROCK ME ON THE WATER-JACKSON BROWNE (1972)
Album: Jackson Browne (aka Saturate Before Using)

I am not a huge Browne fan. In fact, out of the many, many concerts I have seen, his is the only one I have ever dozed off
during. In fairness, his discography at the time was only this one album, he was the opening act, and I had consumed a fair
amount of the contents of a wineskin. Nonetheless, my companions were shaking me awake when America was taking the stage.
Yes, there have been a number of his songs since that I have liked ok, but this is the only one I love. Its gospel influenced
style serves it well, and I really like his voice on this.




59. JUST LIKE A WOMAN-BOB DYLAN (1966)
Album: Blonde On Blonde

I've said this about the previous Dylan recordings on this countdown, but it is most applicable here-in most cases I prefer
others singing his songs, but there are exceptions. This being the biggest example. I actually really like him singing this
song. I can't imagine anyone else striking the balance of snarky insult, wounded pride, and affection required by these lyrics.

I'm with you on Jackson Browne, not that I'm familiar with so many of his songs to say that. But this one is EXCELLENT.

Checking the list of big singles ... OK, I also love "The Load-Out/Stay", and I won't change the station if "The Pretender" or "Jamaica Say You Will" comes on. But the rest have either been done to death or were not that great to begin with, for me.

My favorite Jackson Browne song is Running On Empty. The ex and I used to listen to that one all across Utah and Arizona and back again.

I'm with Sprots, Running On Empty is good stuff. I like this one, but a lot of his early work is uneven. He got on a roll with Running, The Pretender and Lawyers in Love, to name a few. When he turned political, the songs showed it and suffered for it.

I've tried listening to 60s Dylan albums because I'm told they are classics. Blonde On Blonde is one such album, but it just never turned the corner for me. Just Like a Woman is a standout from this one, but, you know, Dylan. That voice.

Dylan is like Kris Kristofferson, for me.

They should write but not sing.

I know that is heresy but I cannot STAND the way Dylan slides up into Every. Single. Note. Only Julie Andrews should be allowed to do that, because she does it with a purpose and a plan.
