This Is Us

#1 Post by Ritterskoop » Tue Oct 25, 2016 11:59 pm

I got to watch tomorrow night's episode already, through the magic of screener copies sent to my paper.

Despite their marketing insistence. I had not cried once during the first four episodes.

This one did finally get me, though it was just some mist, not actual tears. Tiny, tiny spoiler:
Spoiler
The theme is dads and football - I have zero storyline there myself, but it is a good theme.

Ha! Never mind - it aired tonight.

I had it in my head it airs on Wednesdays because that's when I have to watch it, since it's opposite a 3-hour block of CBS shows I watch on Tuesdays. After class, so i don't even watch much of that live.

Anyway.

Not really cheating to watch the screener DVD, since I watched it 3 hours after it aired ... though the occasional note that says [New York images through windows to be added later] is kind of fun. And the no commercials aspect.

A family, shown at several points during the creation of the family's current status/structure. Typically the past explains the current.

1) Father and Mother early stages of relationship/marriage
2) Birth of children, early childhood
3) Current era with children as adults

Several sub-plots mixed into each.

My wife watches, made me watch last night. It is a good show. I will go back and watch the first few episodes to catch up. It does pull at the heart strings.

Some plot specifics
Spoiler
Current family is focused on the three kids. Two men, one is an adopted black man and probably the most "normal", the other is celebrity (actor), the other is a very obese woman. Within each are subplots, each having their own life issues/relationships.

Father/Mother have triplets, but one dies at birth, black man drops his infant son off at a fire station, mother and father replace dead child with "unwanted" baby to keep the triplets.

Black son's biological father comes into his life after he is married and has two kids of his own.

Obese sister has a suitor who cares for her and is interested in her as a person and she doesn't seem to understand how or why he is interested in her.

I strongly recommend this show. And I hope you have the chance to watch the first episode without knowing anything about the show. BiT, after you catch up (or even before, if you trust me), perhaps you would care to put more of your post in a spoiler box. --Bob
