The Boney 500: Songs 182 and 181
Last songs for the week. Week # 13 begins Monday.
182. ROMEO & JULIET-DIRE STRAITS (1980)
Album: Making Movies
Absolutely gorgeous piece of songwriting. Everyone knows Sultans of Swing, Money For Nothing, Walk Of Life...but I think this
is Mark Knopfler's finest work. Lyrics are great, instrumentation is perfect-sparse and tasteful...just terrific.
181. HOLIDAY ROAD-LINDSEY BUCKINGHAM (1983)
Album: National Lampoon's Vacation Soundtrack
Buckingham stepped away from Fleetwood Mac to contribute this little ditty to the "National Lampoon's Vacation" soundtrack.
He's in and out in a little over two minutes, but he makes a lively impact. I'm always left thinking "awwww, it's over already?"
every time it ends. Three things I love most about this song: the harmonies, the bass line, and the "dog barking" effect at the end.
This song is so much fun!

I thought about using Holiday Road in my recent LS game about songs from comedy movies, but I thought this song was too obscure.

I know I've used it in LS a few times. The song is definitely horrifically snubbed by radio, but I was happy the video got played a lot on VH1 Classic.... back when VH1 Classic existed anyway. Like TBone, I'm always disappointed by how short of a song it is....

VH1 Classic exists and has recently begun airing lots of 80's stuff. Stuff like Pop-Up Video, Storytellers, Behind the Music.littlebeast13 wrote:I know I've used it in LS a few times. Making Movies would make my top 10 for albums because songs like Romeo & Juliet are perfectly produced.
Let's hope for more contributions from this album.

VH1C had aired Pop Up Video for a while, but earlier this month they switched the name of the channel to MTV-Classic (why?) and began airing programming with more of a 90's focus. Not that VH1C wasn't already headed in that direction anyway (I fell in love with the channel back when it exclusively played 60's/70's/80's videos), but from what I've seen so far, much if not all of the blocks of 80's eras videos have been kicked to the curb...

Has been moving toward non-music programming steadily, and now seems to have all but abandoned it...airing "classic" shows like "Beavis and Butthead", "Daria", etc. In other words, another channel of crap like the other various MTV/VH-1 channels that have nothing are extremely little to do with music that I pass by when channel surfing.

My mistake. The programming guide I use still lists it as VH1CL and the shows I've watched still have the VH1CL logo, but on the DVR, the name IS now MTVC. I do see much more (late night) programming of 80's stuff than anything else. Sure there are nights with B&B & Daria, but I see way more PUV, BtM, old awards shows and 80's live shows than newer stuff.littlebeast13 wrote:VH1C had aired Pop Up Video for a while, but earlier this month they switched the name of the channel to MTV-Classic (why?) and began airing programming with more of a 90's focus. Call me old fashioned.... but I just want to watch old music videos (PUV is nice, but is a very, very small subset of all music videos). That would be the true definition of MTV or VH1 Classic... though I guess the generation that remembers that golden era of music video history is no longer inside the desired demographic...
