Kicking off Countdown Week 9 with these three songs:


230. YOU'VE GOT TO HIDE YOUR LOVE AWAY-THE BEATLES (1965)
Album: Help!

Lennon's Dylan influence was out in full force here. Impossible for me to hear without
visualizing the scene in the movie where this song was featured. Also impossible for me
to hear without shouting "HEY!" in the appropriate spots. Yeah, like you don't as well...
No Youtube video available (a frustrating number of Beatles songs cannot be found there..which is not
great news for MY countdown as you might imagine), but I found this after a bit of searching. You'll

229. EMPTY PAGES-TRAFFIC (1970)
Album: John Barleycorn Must Die

Mixing R & B with jazz flourishes and throwing it together in a rock & roll stew (Traffic
fans will see what I did there). With Steve Winwood vocalizing up a storm and piloting
some mighty keyboards, this is my favorite song by the group.




228. THIS OLE HOUSE-SHAKIN' STEVENS (1981)
Album: This Ole House

When I was very young, before those guys from Liverpool came along to give me a music of
my very own, I would play my mom and dad's records constantly. They had some early rock records
and later would like a fair share of my records as well. But before all that, it was stuff like
The Four Lads Greatest, Doris Day's Greatest, and Rosemary Clooney's Greatest, which is where I
first heard this song. So years later, when I heard this 50's revivalist from the U. K. put a
rockabilly spin on it, I was hooked. Turned out Mom and Dad liked it too.
