RIP VCR

#1 Post by silverscreenselect » Thu Jul 21, 2016 6:26 pm

Funai, the last manufacturer of VCR's in the world, will be discontinuing production at the end of the month. Last year, they sold 750,000 units worldwide. There are still a number of VCR's, primarily combination DVD/VCR's available through second-tier retailers, but no one will be manufacturing them anymore.

I guess Blockbuster is going to have to rethink its business model.

Perhaps we'll see an uptick in the VCR tape-to-DVD disc conversion business. That's what I did with all my tapes.

I purchased a VCR two years ago for that exact reason. And yep, it was a Funai....

I have over 100 VCR tapes and DVDs that I simply do not watch anymore.

I laugh at my wife for recording every event of our kids' lives...because we never watch them.

Maybe we will later, but I sort of have the attitude of Ryan Bingham "Drink some ginko...photos are for people that can't remember".

And actually? There is evidence that you do not remember an event as well if you watch it via a recording screen rather than live.

I have a very good Sony VCR. I'll save it in hope that in 20 years it will be worth thousands. :P

I'm still waiting for the Betamax revival.
