The Boney 500: Album #134

#1 Post by T_Bone0806 » Tue Jun 21, 2016 8:37 am

The album entry for your Tuesday consideration:

134. SO-PETER GABRIEL (1986)

Gabriel's commercial breakthrough as a solo artist, with hits like "Sledgehammer", "In Your Eyes", and
"Big Time". Other standout tracks for me are the opener "Red Rain" and the breathtaking duet with Kate
Bush, "Don't Give Up". It's not easy to make music that's appealing to the casual listener while still
maintaining your artistic and creative credibility with the more demanding types, but I think Gabriel
pulls it off quite nicely here.

I very much like "Red Rain" and will check out the duet. I liked "Sledgehammer" at the time it came out but may have heard it too many times since then.

Hey, Skoop! The duet was Boney Song #348. The video is one of my favorites.

Personally, I would most likely have rated this higher, but that's not the point of your exercise. We'll just have to wait and see what's yet to come.

Here is a page with some background information about the "So" album, mentioning the influence that (producer) Daniel Lanois had on PG (and the album). It includes 4 of the music videos, too.

Thanks! I saved it in my favorites so I could examine it properly later.

Rankings really are somewhat fluid anyway. Any given day could find me shuffling rankings somewhat. It's the way I was feeling on the day I finalized the list. I could easily on another day rank it at, say #70 or #55 or whatever. Only when you get to the upper reaches of both lists does it get a little firmer in place. Nonetheless, suffice it to say, if it made the list I love it...which frankly I could also say about a good amount of music that DIDN'T make the cut. I had toyed with the idea of just listing the finalists alphabetically to avoid any significant hand wringing on my part, but where's the fun in that?
