Wow, haven't heard that name in a while. Rest in peace.

From Wikipedia
He also occasionally guest-hosted The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, including the only live appearances of any members of The Beatles on the program while still a group (John Lennon and Paul McCartney were the guests in May 1968).

Heard a factoid on him yesterday that I am sure that most here have probably heard, but it was new to me.

Joe grew up on the same block in St. Louis(?) as Yogi Berra and at about the same time. He liked to say that he was a major league baseball player, but he was never the best player on his block.

Yogi and Joe lived across the street from each other.

I'm surprised we got this far in this thread without anyone mentioning Joe's game show career both as a guest and a host. Here's the famous To Tell the Truth episode with Frank "Catch Me If You Can" Abnagale (who didn't look nearly as handsome as Leonardo di Caprio or the guy who starred in the touring musical production we saw.

I have very fond memories of watching The Baseball World of Joe Garagiola as a kid, just before watching the NBC Game of the Week. --Bob

Perhaps no one has felt the need to channel his inner Zach Horan.

Until now.

His son was the general manager of the Diamondbacks. Joe Sr would visit and do the color commentary. Tucson had a park the was named after him but renamed it many years ago for some reason.

I'll leave that aside, and mention that Joe was host of Sale of the Century in 1971–74, including the episode where MarleysMom was an "Audience Sale" contestant, winning a stereo system and a large supply of cocktail mixers.

Still the big winner in our family's game show history... :|

Interesting fact about Joe Garagiola's brief stint as host of To Tell the Truth after many years as a panelist: A young Alan Kalter had just replaced Bill Wendell as the announcer of that show. Eighteen years later, Kalter would replace Wendell again--as David Letterman's announcer.

The sell real furs. That beats a year's supply of Rice-a-Roni.

The problem with winning the real furs is you'll run into the PETA folks who won a year's supply of Benjamin Moore red paint.
