Lyrically Speaking - 2/16/16

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Tue Feb 16, 2016 7:47 am

In yet another desperate grab for an LS theme, I decided to dedicate today's game to the alphas and the omegas of past LSWE contests. While I put no thought into the songs that kick off and end each contest (The very first song I ever used in an LS game was the blah "Surf City"), I do kinda believe that my annual musical challenge should start off and end with a bang. In looking back at the first and last songs I used in each of the past 8 years... I think I can now see why some of my contests sucked so much.

Here are the 16 songs that bookended each of the previous 8 LSWE's, beginning with 2008's alpha and ending with 2015's omega. I even used the same lyrics snippets that appeared in the original games...

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist...

1. Six o'clock TV hour
Don't get caught in foreign tower
Slash and burn, return
Listen to yourself churn

2. I didn't mean to treat you bad,
Didn't know just what I had,
But honey now I do

3. The head nurse spoke up
Said leave this one alone

4. I saw her today, I saw her face
It was the face I loved and I knew
I had to run away and get down on my knees and pray
That they'd go away

5. Her mind is Tiffany-twisted, She got the Mercedes bends
She's got a lot of pretty, pretty boys, that she calls friends

6. Seasons change and so did I
You need not wonder why
You need not wonder why

7. It was 1989 my thoughts were short my hair was long
Caught somewhere between a boy and man
She was seventeen and she was far from in-between
It was summertime in Northern Michigan

8. It was late last night
I was feeling something wasn't right
There was not another soul in sight
Only you, only you

9. 'Cause I am your lady
And you are my man
Whenever you reach for me
I'll do all that I can

10. The phone rings in the middle of the night
My father yells what you gonna do with your life

11. I'm a driver
I'm a winner
Things are gonna change I can feel it

12. Well you're built like a car
You've got a hub cap diamond star halo
You're built like a car, oh yeah

13. Jesus freaks out in the street
Handing tickets out for God
Turning back, she just laughs
The boulevard is not that bad

14. "You know who I am," he said
The speaker was an angel
He coughed and shook his crumpled wings
Closed his eyes and moved his lips
"It's time we should be going"

15. Well the girls can't stand her
Cause she walks, looks and drives like an ace now
You walk like an ace now
You walk like an ace

16. I'm glad I opened your eyes
The have-nots would have tried to freeze you in ice

It's The End of the World As We Know It - REM (What an ironic song to begin nine years worth of LSWE games with...)

2. I didn't mean to treat you bad,
Didn't know just what I had,
But honey now I do
Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue - Crystal Gayle (In that inaugural 2008 LSWE, I had Tuesday Wordplay games where the words "Don't," "Eyes," and "Blue" were all a theme. From the first one I posted (Probably "eyes"), Fanny kept trying to guess this song... and it became a running joke when the later two (pre-written) games were posted. So in the finale, I slipped this song in at the end just for her amusement...)

3. The head nurse spoke up
Said leave this one alone
Bad To The Bone - George Thorogood & the Destroyers

4. I saw her today, I saw her face
It was the face I loved and I knew
I had to run away and get down on my knees and pray
That they'd go away
Needles and Pins - Searchers (This was someone's submission in the All-Request finale of the 2009 LSWE...)

5. Her mind is Tiffany-twisted, She got the Mercedes bends
She's got a lot of pretty, pretty boys, that she calls friends
Hotel California - Eagles

6. Seasons change and so did I
You need not wonder why
You need not wonder why
No Time - Guess Who

7. It was 1989 my thoughts were short my hair was long
Caught somewhere between a boy and man
She was seventeen and she was far from in-between
It was summertime in Northern Michigan
All Summer Long - Kid Rock

8. It was late last night
I was feeling something wasn't right
There was not another soul in sight
Only you, only you
I Saw The Light - Todd Rundgren (TBone's submission from my 2011 All Request finale... the one that had the lyrics written into ES drawings...)

9. 'Cause I am your lady
And you are my man
Whenever you reach for me
I'll do all that I can
The Power of Love - Celine Dion (The 2012 LSWE was predictably shitty after starting off with this turd...)

10. The phone rings in the middle of the night
My father yells what you gonna do with your life
Girls Just Wanna Have Fun - Cyndi Lauper

11. I'm a driver
I'm a winner
Things are gonna change I can feel it
Loser - Beck

12. Well you're built like a car
You've got a hub cap diamond star halo
You're built like a car, oh yeah
Get It On (Bang A Gong) - T.Rex or Power Station (From the 2013 LSWE finale that was a hidden tribute to "Bohemian Rhapsody"...)

13. Jesus freaks out in the street
Handing tickets out for God
Turning back, she just laughs
The boulevard is not that bad
Tiny Dancer - Elton John (Funny how many people thought of Jesus from "Levon" and guessed that...)

14. "You know who I am," he said
The speaker was an angel
He coughed and shook his crumpled wings
Closed his eyes and moved his lips
"It's time we should be going"
Look Back in Anger - David Bowie

15. Well the girls can't stand her
Cause she walks, looks and drives like an ace now
You walk like an ace now
You walk like an ace
Fun Fun Fun - Beach Boys

16. I'm glad I opened your eyes
The have-nots would have tried to freeze you in ice
Have You Seen Your Mother Baby (Standing in the Shadows) - Rolling Stones (The 2014 and 2015 finales were cobbled together from Music Choice, and the channel that plays all the obscure rock always got slotted into the last song... which explains the Bowie and Stones songs in this game...)
