ANSWERS/POINTS LS C&W WEEKEND March 29

#1 Post by fantine33 » Sat Mar 29, 2008 6:32 am

Here we go, the last game of the month, and it's C&W Weekend! How great is that? Ha! I'm going to see about getting scores for Wednesday and Thursday (I thought I already did Wednesday, but I must have gotten sidetracked), but I probably won't have Friday until tomorrow since I'll be at the Can tonight. I said AT the Can, not IN the can, ha!

So, has there been any rumblings as to someone taking over next month (like they could possibly follow this exquisite mess)? Usually I give some extra time so stragglers can answer, but I'll have final scores up by noon on Monday, just in case there's some question about who gets first nibs.

1. Now tell me the truth
Do these old shoes look funny
Honey its almost time
Now you be careful
Gotta go, I love you
And have a beautiful day

2. Yeah the grass won't grow and the sun's too hot
The whole darn world is goin' to pot
Might as well like it 'cause you're all that I've got
But, maybe things'll get a little better, in the mornin'
Maybe things'll get a little better

3. I read about some squirrely guy,
Who claims, he just don't believe in fightin'.
An' I wonder just how long,
The rest of us can count on bein' free.
They love our milk an' honey,
But they preach about some other way of livin'

4. You’d just say the same old things
That you be sayin’ all along,
Just lay there in your bed
And keep your mouth shut ‘til I’m gone
Don’t give me that old familiar cryin’, fussin’ moanin’

5. Your beauty is beyond compare,
With flaming locks of auburn hair,
With ivory skin and eyes of emerald green.
Your smile is like a breath of spring;
Your voice is soft like summer rain,
And I cannot compete with you,

6. Its late and she's waiting and I know I should go home
But every time I start to leave they play another song
Then someone buys another round and wherever drinks are free

7. It's another night alone
I'm just a face in the crowd
I came here for the laughter
And the music playing loud
We're all here for a good time
But they don't know what a good time is

8. You might say I was taking it hard
Oh, she wrote me off with a call
But don't you wager that I'll hide the sorrow
When I may break right down and bawl

9. They say time takes its toll on a body
Makes a young girl's brown hair turn gray
But honey I don't care
I ain't in love with your hair
And if it all fell out well I'd love you anyway

10. A long time forgotten
The dreams that just fell by the way
The good life he promised
Ain’t what she’s been living today
But she never complains of the bad times
And the bad things he’s done

Bonus Instrumental: This pickin’ and grinning’ guitar player showed just how good he was with his rendition of this Spanish classical guitar song. He would preface his performance by saying “I put it in a jar and, when it was ripe, I picked it”. Ha!

Bonus Bonus: The artist in #2 above was also featured in an earlier game with a song that nobody got, although I always thought it was his biggest and most recognizable song. What was it? (Now we’ll see if anybody ever bothers to read the answers, no fair doing a board search.)

2008 Note: I wrote the above bonus in 2002, but it's still true this time around. I should have learned something the first time, huh? Ha!

Super Bonus: The artist in #6 above learned his instrument by taking lessons along with his two cousins. Five points for each cousin.

So we're ending on that C&W thing, huh? I don't really get why this has been my best category, but it unquestionably has. In the very unlikely chance I manage to win this thing, I don't have time to host another game, plus I'm a little shell-shocked from the last time I tried.

And, I may be wrong, but though you've made some disparaging remarks about my taste in music, I think I did way better this month than I usually do, which I think says something about that on some level we sometimes think alike

1. Now tell me the truth
Do these old shoes look funny
Honey its almost time
Now you be careful
Gotta go, I love you
And have a beautiful day
And here I go saying this is my best category and I don't know the first one.

2. Yeah the grass won't grow and the sun's too hot
The whole darn world is goin' to pot
Might as well like it 'cause you're all that I've got
But, maybe things'll get a little better, in the mornin'
Maybe things'll get a little better
?

3. I read about some squirrely guy,
Who claims, he just don't believe in fightin'.
An' I wonder just how long,
The rest of us can count on bein' free.
They love our milk an' honey,
But they preach about some other way of livin'
I lost this CD (or the CD I think it is) a few years ago in a move. But it sure sounds like The Fightin' Side of Me - Merle Haggard. ("You don't have to call me Merle Haggard anymore, even though you're on my fightin' side")

4. You’d just say the same old things
That you be sayin’ all along,
Just lay there in your bed
And keep your mouth shut ‘til I’m gone
Don’t give me that old familiar cryin’, fussin’ moanin’
The Obligatory (and Bobby's-neck-saving) Johnny Cash (hopefully #1 of more than one) - this one's Understand Your Man

5. Your beauty is beyond compare,
With flaming locks of auburn hair,
With ivory skin and eyes of emerald green.
Your smile is like a breath of spring;
Your voice is soft like summer rain,
And I cannot compete with you,
Jolene - I have to admit I really like Mindy (Mindie?) Smith's version, but nowhere near as much as I like Dolly's. So I'll say by Dolly Parton. This song reminds me of political correctness and cliches.

Alot of cliches are, well, cliches for a reason - my f-i-l proclaims "we've got it good!" at least 3-4 times a day, so much so that I want to vomit every time he does. But we DO have it good.

And political correctness - taken to the ends that some people try to take it, it's crazy and oppressive. But most of the underlying building blocks make a lot of sense, and they're things that haven't exactly been taken for granted for much of our history. People who aren't white men SHOULD have opportunities. There IS value at looking at history from viewpoints other than the victors'. Organized prayer at public schools, and for that matter, indoctrinating public schoolchildren to say a pledge to a nation "under god", ARE offensive to people who don't believe in such.

Jolene IS a total cliche you-done-me-wrong song. And yet it's SOOOO good.

6. Its late and she's waiting and I know I should go home
But every time I start to leave they play another song
Then someone buys another round and wherever drinks are free
What Made Milwaukee Famous - The Killer

7. It's another night alone
I'm just a face in the crowd
I came here for the laughter
And the music playing loud
We're all here for a good time
But they don't know what a good time is
?

8. You might say I was taking it hard
Oh, she wrote me off with a call
But don't you wager that I'll hide the sorrow
When I may break right down and bawl
The Race Is On - George Jones. I'm a little embarrassed that the first version of this song I was familiar with was the Grateful Dead's

9. They say time takes its toll on a body
Makes a young girl's brown hair turn gray
But honey I don't care
I ain't in love with your hair
And if it all fell out well I'd love you anyway
?

10. A long time forgotten
The dreams that just fell by the way
The good life he promised
Ain’t what she’s been living today
But she never complains of the bad times
And the bad things he’s done
Good Hearted Woman - Willie Nelson. I think I remember my mom singing "Good-Hearted Doormat" at some point.

Bonus Instrumental: This pickin’ and grinning’ guitar player showed just how good he was with his rendition of this Spanish classical guitar song. He would preface his performance by saying “I put it in a jar and, when it was ripe, I picked it”. Ha!
I was going to say that Bela Fleck has probably played a few Spanish classical songs, but you said guitar, so I'm stumped.

Bonus Bonus: The artist in #2 above was also featured in an earlier game with a song that nobody got, although I always thought it was his biggest and most recognizable song. What was it? (Now we’ll see if anybody ever bothers to read the answers, no fair doing a board search.)

Super Bonus: The artist in #6 above learned his instrument by taking lessons along with his two cousins. Five points for each cousin.
One of them was Mickey Gilley. I know the other one was somebody famous, too, as something other than a musician, but I can't pull it. Ben Jones?

First off, Fanny, thank you for this month's games! Another job well done.

Second, should I hold on to the lead and win, I cannot assume hosting duties this month. Too much going on that might result in meisterus interruptus. Plus I have felt like crap the last week. Hopefully someone's got some inclination to host. If not, I'll step up at some point.

I'm not having much luck on the Musicals LS, so I may just take a participation point and be done with it. I'm not gonna catch mini anyway...

And I'm gonna have to try to dig up a picture of our old cat Fluffy me and my sisters had back in the day. I didn't notice it in the toilet bowl cleaner picture, but the side of Fanny in your new avatar shows a clear resemblance to Fluffy....

A likely sad finale to my performance - if I can hold on to my current position I'll be thrilled.

2008 Note: I wrote the above bonus in 2002, but it's still true this time around. I should have learned something the first time, huh? Ha!

Super Bonus: The artist in #6 above learned his instrument by taking lessons along with his two cousins. Five points for each cousin.
Spoiler
Bonus: "Pickin' and grinnin'" makes me think of Roy Clark and "Spanish classical guitar song" evokes Malaguena, so that's what I'm going with.

Bonus Bonus: Well, since I don't know #2 in this quiz it'd be hard for me to answer this.

Super Bonus: One of the cousins is Jimmy Swaggert, the other is Mickey Gilley.

Spoiler
1-10. NFI by The Blank Stares

Bonus Instrumental: I recognize "pickin' and grinnin'" as Buck Owens and Roy Clark from "Hee Haw". I suppose that means I have a 50/50 chance, so I'm sure I'll guess wrong when I choose Buck Owens.

Spoiler
2. Bony Fingers/Hoyt Axton & someone female whose name I can't remember

3. You're Walking On The Fighting Side Of Me/Merle Haggard

5. Jolene/Dolly Parton; its been covered, but accept no substitutes

10. She's A Good-Lovin' Woman In Love With A Good-Timin' Man/Waylon Jennings

Bonus Instrumental: Something played by Chet Atkins?

Bonus Bonus: Merle Haggard's best selling song was "Okie From Muskogee"; he's written bunches better songs, in my opinion, than that. An earlier best-selling classic, I think earlier anyway, was "Mama Tried".
Very loosely based on his life. He did turn 21 in prison, but he wasn't doing "life without parole", obviously.

Super Bonus: 1 cousin would be Jerry Lee Lewis?

O for pity's sake I read a bonus wrong.
Spoiler
Hoyt Axton's biggest-selling song was prolly Joy To The World, but not done by him. His mom's biggest selling song was Heartbreak Hotel, but not done by her.
Its been a very bad month for me & my brain is still frozen or I'd be trying harder.

2. Yeah the grass won't grow and the sun's too hot
The whole darn world is goin' to pot
Might as well like it 'cause you're all that I've got
But, maybe things'll get a little better, in the mornin'

An' I wonder just how long,
The rest of us can count on bein' free.
They love our milk an' honey,
But they preach about some other way of livin'

THE FIGHTIN' SIDE OF ME - MERLE HAGGARD

4. You’d just say the same old things
That you be sayin’ all along,
Just lay there in your bed
And keep your mouth shut ‘til I’m gone
Don’t give me that old familiar cryin’, fussin’ moanin’

UNDERSTAND YOUR MAN - JOHNNY CASH

I think this is the third time (at least) this month that a blind Johnny Cash guess has gifted lb with 10 points.

5. Your beauty is beyond compare,
With flaming locks of auburn hair,
With ivory skin and eyes of emerald green.
Your smile is like a breath of spring;
Your voice is soft like summer rain,
And I cannot compete with you,

JOLENE - DOLLY PARTON

6. Its late and she's waiting and I know I should go home
But every time I start to leave they play another song
Then someone buys another round and wherever drinks are free

WHAT'S MADE MILWAUKEE FAMOUS (HAS MADE A LOSER OUT OF ME) - JERRY LEE LEWIS

TLITF got full credit for The Killer because, well, obviously...ha!

Although nobody bit, I would have accepted Rod Stewart as well (even though he didn't fit the bonus question) because this is on my favourite RS album (Handbags and Gladrags).

7. It's another night alone
I'm just a face in the crowd
I came here for the laughter
And the music playing loud
We're all here for a good time
But they don't know what a good time is

HELLO DADDY, GOOD MORNING DARLIN' - MEL MCDANIEL

8. You might say I was taking it hard
Oh, she wrote me off with a call
But don't you wager that I'll hide the sorrow
When I may break right down and bawl

THE RACE IS ON - GEORGE JONES

9. They say time takes its toll on a body
Makes a young girl's brown hair turn gray
But honey I don't care
I ain't in love with your hair
And if it all fell out well I'd love you anyway

FOREVER AND EVER, AMEN - RANDY TRAVIS

10. A long time forgotten
The dreams that just fell by the way
The good life he promised
Ain’t what she’s been living today
But she never complains of the bad times
And the bad things he’s done

GOOD HEARTED WOMAN - WAYLON JENNINGS AND WILLIE NELSON

Full credit for either one of them separately, the big hit was a duet, but they co-wrote it and they both did it solo, even though it was a signature song for Waylon

Bonus Instrumental: This pickin’ and grinning’ guitar player showed just how good he was with his rendition of this Spanish classical guitar song. He would preface his performance by saying “I put it in a jar and, when it was ripe, I picked it”. Ha!

MALAGUENA - ROY CLARK

Isn't it exciting when something sticks, tbone? When you get on BAM and this is your million dollar question, I expect a kickback!

Bonus Bonus: The artist in #2 above was also featured in an earlier game with a song that nobody got, although I always thought it was his biggest and most recognizable song. What was it? (Now we’ll see if anybody ever bothers to read the answers, no fair doing a board search.)

WILD BULL RIDER

The question wasn't what was his biggest song, but what song had been used in an earlier LS game (it's just my opinion that it's his biggest, that was performed by him), so luckily I didn't have any judgment calls there.

2008 Note: I wrote the above bonus in 2002, but it's still true this time around. I should have learned something the first time, huh? Ha!

Super Bonus: The artist in #6 above learned his instrument by taking lessons along with his two cousins. Five points for each cousin.

MICKEY GILLEY AND JIMMY SWAGGART

Mel got full credit since she had all three of them, just not in the right place (I'm going soft in my old age, let's blame it on Jerry Lee Lewis. Ha!)

I'll do the scores in a bit, the Nuggets require my full concentration at the moment.

This q came a few days too early. Someone sang this on "American Idol" tonight. Had they sung it LAST week, I may have recognized the lyrics for this LS game...

Everybody who stuck it out and played the last CW&W got 20 bonus points!

As for other extras, Caro got 2 points for every song title he used that I actually know the words to and 5 points for Bo and Luke Duke because it was funny. Lb gets The Fantine Memorial JJ Cale Invocation 5 points, plus a few 2 pointers that I forget why already, plus his legitimate Johnny Cash points. And marley and astro both get double participation points to go with their bonus points.
