A True Sporting Gesture

#1 Post by Spock » Fri Feb 05, 2016 12:38 pm

The Spocklette (9th Grade) is on the JV basketball team and only gets to play when we are way ahead. I have no illusions that she should get more time. About a month ago, they played St. John's and we were way ahead and she got a lot of playing time and her first basket at the JV level.

Last night, we played them again and won by something like 44 to 12. She played the last 6 minutes and scored a basket at the last seconds. Everybody cheered loudly for her etc.

I noticed after the game and handshakes that the opposing coach came up to her and shook her hand or gave her a fist bump. I thought that was really cool.

That's cool!

I've seen a lot of kids of that age in the same situation - they are basically used to their role as bench warmer. But once they get their chance to play and especially if they score (and the confidence that comes with that), many of them rapidly advance and become not only a starter but one of the more talented members of the team.
