I Must Be Doing Something Right

#1 Post by silverscreenselect » Wed Feb 03, 2016 12:19 am

Someone has gone to a lot of trouble to try to scam me. I accepted a LinkedIn invitation from "D.N. YNG" who said he was an executive at Abax Global Capital in Hong Kong. I get invites occasionally from people I've never heard of and I usually accept them on the theory that having more points of contact is always better. But then I get the following private Linked-In message from him
Good day Mr. Steve , it is of great pleasure connecting with you via linkedin.
My name is Donald Yang, managing partner and CEO of Abax Global Capital Hedge Fund here in Hong Kong; I have URGENT and discreet business proposal for you that shall benefit us immensely should you choose to participate. Before I reveal any sensitive information it is important I state categorically that all privilege information concerning my proposal and this business transaction is treated with utmost confidentiality due to source of funds. These funds are held with our prime brokers which is an offshore bank here in Hong Kong. With your permission, I shall give step by step explanation on why I need your assistance and also the source of funds. Further information on how we shall proceed legally to obtain these funds will be provided in due course once I ascertain your genuine intentions and willingness to assist. Should you be interested, then I will like to hear from you the soonest time possible via my private email address to enable me provide you with more details on how we are to proceed. (donaldyang@******.com) I anticipate and look forward to a successful business relationship with you. Yours faithfully Donald Yang.
The company is legitimate; it's a private equity firm. And its CEO is Donald Yang, whose resume on their website conveniently matches his LinkedIn profile. At the time, he had about 250 connections, most of whom seemed to be entrepreneur types.

I'm somewhat flattered that the CEO of a major international private equity company would approach me with an investment opportunity so sensitive that he has to use his private e-mail to discuss it.

I'm even more flattered that some scam artist would think I'm doing well enough to even waste type trying to scam me with a come-on like this. But I give him credit for trying something more sophisticated than the usual Nigerian oil minister. Not only that, but I received two other e-mails from people supposedly overseas in the last couple of days wanting to know if I would help them as an attorney collect moneys they were owed in various international transactions. And I had another phone call today from Windows technical support.

It's good to know that there's some people out there who think I'm doing well.

I blocked him and sent a copy of his e-mail to LinkedIn

I accepted a LinkedIn invitation a long time ago and was immediately spammed with about a dozen more. Now I delete them without opening them.

What would happen if you gave the "Nigerian Oil Minister" the contact info for Mr. Donald Yang?
