So, I'm trying to strategize to determine the best time to audition this year. Is is best to get in there at the very beginning? Or is it best to let them start seeing people and then go in a month or two later but still a month or so before taping starts?
I'm guessing that they'll start doing auditions in mid to late May and then start taping in August.
Anybody have any thoughts?

I would think the earlier the better. That certainly seems reasonable. I basically have lots of flexibility as to when I audition, so it makes sense for me to try and optimize the process to the extent that I can. Doing a "summer" audition gives one a chance to be considered for more taping dates, if one makes it into the pool, than waiting for one of the audience auditions. OTOH, if one has to go to some effort to travel to NYC (not an issue for those of you who live there), I find the opportunity to see some tapings makes the trip more worthwhile than going all that way just for audition.
Auditioning in the very first week or so may not be a good idea, because they may still be training the new APs and calibrating exactly what type of contestants they're interested in for the new season. And there is often a longer delay to receive a PC, as they wait to bunch up the first batch of responses.
