Lamarckism is the belief that acquired characteristics can be passed on to offspring - Lamarck used the illustration of a giraffe neck.

10K: About all I know here is that we don't call Big Papi "king". We call him Big Papi. ATA.

20K: Lamark thought you could inherit acquired characteristics. Made him a laughing stock for years. Now we know that through epigenetics, using "switches" on chromosomes that are influenced by the environment, you can turn genes on or off & have that on or offness passed down in the germ line. Whether its passed down by the genes in eggs & sperm having been turned on or off, or by the chemical environment of the parent (in which case it would have to be the mother) passed on to the embryo.

But because no-one has studied Lamark, I dunno what evidence he thought he had. And I'm supposed to be my own science "PAF". Probably call +1 for this anyway. If they don't know, burn more lifelines.

I drew a blank on this until I read Dennis's remark about King James. Oh well -- ATA gone.

-- America would be a better place if leaders would do more long-term thinking. -- Wilma Mankiller
