TMitSSS missed one. :)

This guy didn't make the obits at telegraph.co.uk, but he probably should have. He had a more amazing 20s and 30s than most anyone else ever had in a lifetime. He was a local hero here.

Elsey also took credit for helping to write the Truman Doctrine, which established in 1947 that the United States would provide political, military and economic help to any democratic nation threatened by authoritarian forces.

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.
