Golden Globe Nominations Released

Since I posted the SAG nominations yesterday, here are the Golden Globes. They are far more of a joke than the SAG awards, since it's all pretty much a big party where the cast and crew from each nominated TV series or movie sit together at the same table and get drunk. This year they've hit a new low by allowing The Martian to be nominated as a comedy because Matt Damon cracks a few jokes. By that token, every movie since Schindler's List probably qualifies as a comedy too. Ricky Gervais hosts (asterisk means a film I've seen):

I saw The Martian.

I also saw Mad Max: Fury Road on DVD from my library, and I'm very glad I didn't have to pay to see it. Yes, the CGI fight scenes were impressive, but it was far too ridiculous for my taste. And what's-his-name was a very bland Max.

Do they use the same "date" rules that the Oscars use? I ask because I saw at least one film on the SAG list that according to my local billboard won't be released in Los Angeles until January. --Bob

It's possible that a movie can have an official qualifying run at a single theater and then have a platform release beginning in January. The only movies that actually premiere in January are usually total crap they know has no chance of an Oscar bid.

Here's the SAG rules on eligibility:

Motion pictures, television, cable and new media programs exhibited or broadcast during the 2015 calendar year shall be eligible for nomination. Motion pictures must be feature-length (over 60 minutes in running time), and must be first publicly exhibited (previews excluded) by means of 35mm or 70mm film or in a 24- or 48-frame progressive scan Digital Cinema format (minimum native resolution 2048 by 1080 pixels, with pixel bit depth, color primaries, and image and sound file formats suitable for exhibition in commercial Digital Cinema sites) before a paying audience in a commercial motion picture house in Los Angeles County for at least a seven-day consecutive run commencing in calendar year 2015, following normal exploitation and advertising consistent with the treatment of the producer’s other pictures. If the motion picture has been theatrically exhibited elsewhere prior to its qualifying theatrical exhibition in Los Angeles County, it shall be eligible if the prior exhibition occurred after January 1, 2014. If the motion picture has been previewed on cable television after January 1, 2014 and prior to its qualifying theatrical exhibition in Los Angeles County, it will be considered eligible in the year of its qualifying theatrical release provided it has not been submitted in a previous year as a television film.

This problem actually started a couple of years ago when they they moved the Oscars up by a month. It used to be that the Oscar nominations came out in early February and the awards were at the end of March. The other awards (SAG, director's guild, writer's guild, etc.) had their awards shortly before the Oscars but in any case the nominations came out after the first of the year. Now with the time being compressed, they have to do it this way. I guess they go on the honor system.

No producer of a big name film would risk being ruled ineligible after the fact for any awards by not actually showing the movie. In almost every case, a movie that attracts award attention has a splashy premiere, even if it's limited like The Revenant.
