My wife, stepdaughter, and I just got back from playing trivia at O'Brien's Pub in Santa Monica. The regulars there take turns hosting and make up their own questions. The regulars include people such as Brad Rutter, Pam Muller, Jerome Vered, etc. My wife and I played alone as a team and finished a distant last. It was fun to see a lot of people I know from the TCONA though.
I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I needed to be.

It's a pretty intimidating scene. I've played there a few times and was always fortunate to be able to join a team with some people smarter than me, at least on the type of questions they ask.

I've played a few times there as well, usually on uly's team.
