Snow morons

Been watching the folks across the street (and over one lot) being morons all afternoon, and now it's up to four vehicles.

Just to establish things -- I'm in the city proper, but it's a residential cul-de-sac, relatively level and straight. No curbs, ditches on the side for drainage.

After shoveling out my drive and cleaning off my cars this morning so we can drive to work in the morning (six inches of dry snow, more than is normally seen here in Richmond, but nothing that was too exhausting to take care of), I saw these folks get a car in the ditch between the driveways across the street. Mind you, this isn't the first time I've seen this; it seems every family that rents that house does this in a snow. They back out of the drive, don't turn the wheel enough, and go forward into the ditch.

Of course, it would help if they actually tried to shovel off things instead of driving off into the snow.

After trying to drive it out of the ditch (with no luck) off and on for two hours, a pickup with a chain comes by, but that doesn't work.

So, a small tow truck comes by. It gets the car out of the ditch, but the tow truck ends up in the ditch on the other side. Idiot with car parks it in the street in front of opposite driveway (instead of moving it forward another 10 yards to keep it legal if he can't move it further; if I leave in the morning, I'll likely hit it.)

Second tow truck comes to get first tow truck. It's now in the ditch too.

Another car, apparently affiliated with the tow trucks, has come by to help, but is parked in the middle of the road, blocking traffic. Hopefully he'll be gone even if the truck aren't.

I wonder what the fool was going out for that was so dang important.

EDIT: Fifth car has come up, a four wheel Excursion-type. The first tow truck couldn't turn around in the street, and it was used to pull it from sideways to a forward position. This tow truck has since driven off the road three times going forward (including hitting my mailbox -- minor damage, but I got pictures in a hurry, including of the truck), and is stuck in the ditch across the street one lot down. In other words, it's gone into the ditch four times in the span of three lots. Meanwhile, the car that caused the problem has driven off to parts unknown and won't be blocking the road.

EDIT 2: Now they have a THIRD tow truck to try and pull the first tow truck out. Oy!

And I thought you had to go to northern Canada for reality shows about winter tow truck drivers!

Everything finally got cleared out about 8 pm. After getting tow truck #1 out of the neighborhood, TT #3 got TT #2 turned around and they left.

I think they should allow the South to secede from the Union during the winter. It's really quite embarrassing....

The divers made it onto one of the late night shows, so now there will be no stopping them.

Eventually someone will jump into a snowpile with a car or street sign or whatever under it, & hurt themself badly.


Could happen if they land awkwardly even in a snowpile that's just snow. Happens to untrained divers into water.


I'm not wishing for this, just being realistic.


Kids sledding down big snowpiles are not making the news, but they're everywhere, & real cute. But with traffic picking up that can be dangerous too.

Seriously, if I had as much snow as Boston had, I might be tempted to jump out a window too.

And, in the what-are-they-thinking department, one of my coworkers told the story of a neighbor who took his four-wheel drive pickup, attached his canoe to the back with a chain, and dragged it behind with his kids riding in it through the snow. (I hope it was a lake canoe, which is flat-bottomed!)

Before the most recent storm, a big yacht stranded on snow piles somewhere downtown or anyway very urban made all the news shows. It had been being towed to a boat show when the towing vehicle got into an accident. It had not actually sailed in there.
