You may not recognize the name, but he changed the face of televised sports forever. Verna was the inventor of instant replay, which was used for the first time in the 1963 Army-Navy game that featured Roger Staubach as the Navy quarterback. He figured out how to find the exact spot on the tape to generate a replay so they could fill dead time between plays in a football game. Announcer Lindsay Nelson had to warn viewers when they saw the replay of an Army touchdown that the second TD wasn't live and that Army hadn't actually scored again.
Age 81.
