#1 Post by Bob78164 » Tue Jan 06, 2015 10:20 am

What time does the Hall of Fame announce the 2015 inductees? --Bob

The writers elected Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez, John Smoltz, and Craig Biggio.

Piazza was close to 70% -- he should get in next year. Rock Raines (the greatest leadoff hitter ever born who wasn't named Ricky Henderson) is above 50%, but now has only two years left on the ballot. Bagwell also is above 50%.

Raines also gave Randy his "Big Unit" nickname when they were Montreal teammates

Haven't had time to verify but I saw somewhere last night that the last time four people got in on the first vote was 1955 or '56.

According to the Hall's Web site, 1955 was the last time the writers elected four new members (this was Biggio's third year on the ballot). --Bob

They mentioned this on the MLB channel. 1955 was Catcher Gabby Hartnett, Pitchers Ted Lyons and Dazzy Vance, and some guy named DiMaggio.

The pitcher you accidentally omitted was Dazzy Vance. --Bob

Yes, I realized it as soon as I posted it.

There are still some mummified voters in the BBWA who refused to make it a unanimous vote for Martinez and Johnson.

Writer Joe Posnanski sums it up:
— Almost nine percent of the voters saw Pedro Martinez pitch — they saw him just like you and me — and decided not to check his name. It doesn’t matter. But it’s such a loss for them. If you don’t get goosebumps of joy doing your part to elect players like Pedro Martinez into the Hall of Fame, I have no idea why you vote in the first place.

Most of them don't.

The best way to fix what's fucked up about the HoF voting would be to automatically revoke the voting privileges of anyone who turns in a blank ballot. I'll bet a good 5% of the bitter old beat writers do just that...

In this case, there may have been a reason. At least one writer didn't check their names because of the Rule of 10, reasoning that Johnson and Martinez were getting in anyway, and other candidates had greater need of his vote. --Bob
