Doesn't it have to play in NYC as well?

At least TheConfessor can see it.
I asked this question (out of idle curiosity) a year or two ago, and the answer I remember is that it has to show for at least a week in a theater in Los Angeles County. One of the theaters that will carry the film is the Cinefamily in Los Angeles, about two or three miles from my house, where it's apparently opening on Christmas Day. --Bob
You are correct. I must have read the NYC bit from someone who got it wrong.

It looks like you'll soon be able to watch it on YouTube.

Variety wrote:It looks like “The Interview” will appear in theaters after all. Select exhibitors are preparing Christmas Day screenings of the controversial James Franco-Seth Rogen comedy, with the Plaza Atlanta theater and Alamo Drafthouse announcing via social media that Sony Pictures has authorized them to show the film despite major exhibitors cancelling screenings in the wake of a cyber attack that debilitated the studio.

There is also growing speculation that the studio will offer the film via VOD. Sony Pictures CEO Michael Lynton stated in an interview with CNN on Friday that no on-demand providers had stepped forward to offer to handle the VOD release, but that may have changed in the past few days with the intense media coverage of “The Interview” situation.

There will soon be an Alamo Drafthouse in downtown L.A., but I believe it is still under construction. That is the same chain whose Austin location received an angry message from an ejected theatergoer and created this awesome "turn off your phones" message:

Well maybe. It's there, I paid for it but then couldn't watch it because the servers were apparently overloaded. I'll try later today.

Not surprisingly, all of today's showings at the Plaza Theater in Atlanta sold out (they'd probably have been lucky to be 10% full today with their usual fare). We'll try to go next week. After New Year's, my time will be somewhat limited.

I rented it on YouTube last night. For all the controversy, it is not that good of a movie...The RNC may regret defending the movie after seeing the content.

From what I've heard, it's silly smut like Rogen's last film Neighbors and absent the controversy would pretty much have disappeared from public consciousness very quickly. Now, his clout in Hollywood has undoubtedly increased because he's "edgy." It will be a while before audiences get to see Rogen onscreen again though. His next major role, other than a voice in the upcoming Kung Fu Panda 3 is a movie due next Christmas season (still untitled) in which he and Joseph Gordon-Levitt want to throw the Christmas party to end all Christmas parties (in other words, typical Rogen).

I enjoyed The Neighbors, and thought it was much better than this movie...I am not opposed to liking "silly" movies. I could be biased because I think James Franco is one of the worst mainstream actors of my lifetime.

I was certainly not in its target demographic.

I enjoyed seeing Emma Watson ham it up. --Bob

My son and I both like James Franco and Seth Rogen. We've been waiting to see The Interview for months. Last night, we watched it with the family (the grandkids had to watch another movie). We were in a hurry because the whole family wanted to see it together, we were concerned that it could get hacked, and it was the patriotic thing to do (it's crazy that watching this movie has become a patriotic act). We laughed the whole time.
