Atlanta has lost 79 games so the Braves cannot win more than 83 games this season. Washington has already won 91 games so the Braves cannot win the National League Eastern Division. St. Louis and Pittsburgh both have won at least 84 games so Atlanta will finish behind at least two teams in the NL Central. The Dodgers and Giants both have won at least 84 games so the Braves will finish behind at least two teams in the NL West. Put away your tomahawks, Braves fans. Atlanta has been toastified. --Bob

Toronto has lost 77 games so the Blue Jays cannot win more than 85 games. Baltimore has already won 94 games so Toronto cannot win the American League Eastern Division. Detroit and Kansas City both have won at least 86 games so the Blue Jays will finish behind at least two teams in the AL Central. The Angels and Oakland both have won at least 86 games so the Blue Jays will finish behind at least two teams in the AL West. Blame Canada. The Blue Jays have been toastified. --Bob

I was in Toronto and saw a Blue Jays game a couple of weeks ago. The attendance had fallen as they faded from contention.
The newspaper has picked up the same language:
Toronto Star banner today: "That was quite a fall, Blue Jays. They were the toast of baseball on June 6, cruising along with a six-game lead in the AL East. Now they're simply toast. (page) S1."
Meanwhile it looks like either Royals and A's wins or a Yankees loss will put the Bronx Bombers in the same place as Toronto since the Yankees have lost 76 games.

The guys on MLB Network last night said the Brewers loss made them toast, but I guess they should check with Bob before they make such statements. I see they can still theoretically tie the Giants for the second wildcard...

Yes they can.

And who knows? The way the Giants are playing right now...of course, the Brewers aren't much better.

I'm still hoping against hope the Bucs grab the Central crown, although I think when they got swept by the Cards at the beginning of September, losing all three games by a total of four runs, that did them in in that regard.

As well they should be. It is one thing to run into a cold streak along the way; it is quite another to go into a complete collapse. And this is being written with no bitterness; one of the things I love about baseball is that the long season brings out both the best and the worst of teams. In this case, unfortunately, the "worst" (which could be spelled "wurst", being Milwaukee and all) managed to overcome a very good "best". So it goes. We will be taking in Brewskis v. Cubbies this Sunday, and we will be cheering as loudly as ever...and then it is on to next spring...

As a Royals fan who has very little to cheer since high school, and who still hates the Yankees after the heartbreak of 1976, I am very proud to say that the Oakland A's are toast!
