August LS Day 11: 30 day song challenge, pt 3
August LS Day 11 – Thirty Day Song Challenge, pt. 3
The last ten days of the thirty day song challenge. Today’s challenges are a bit of a stretch for me, but I’ve given my most honest answers here – identify the title and artist for one point each. Give your answer to the challenge for an additional bonus point. And since this is the last of the 30 day song challenge, but I have one more Monday ahead of me, I'll give 2 more bonus points for a song challenge idea you think should be included in next week's game.
1. day 21 - a song that you listen to when you’re happy
Well I woke up this morning stumbled out of my rack
I opened up the paper to the page in the back
It only took a minute for my finger to find
My daily dose of destiny, under my sign
2. day 22 - a song that you listen to when you’re sad
Light up your face with gladness
Hide every trace of sadness,
Although a tear may be ever so near,
That's the time you must keep on trying,
3. day 23 - a song that you want to play at your wedding
I guess when you met me it was just one of those things.
But don't ever bet me 'cause I'm gonna be true if you let me.
4. day 24 - a song that you want to play at your funeral
But when ye come, and all the flow’rs are dyin’
If I am dead, as dead I well may be
Ye’ll come and find the place where I am lyin’
And kneel and say an Ave there for me.
5. day 25 - a song that makes you laugh
Take your cigarette from its holder,
And burn your initials in my shoulder.
Fracture my spine,
And swear that you're mine,
6. day 26 - a song that you can play on an instrument
The storms are raging on the rollin' sea
And on the highway of regrets
The winds of change are blowing wild and free
You ain't seen nothin' like me yet.
7. day 27 - a song that you wish you could play
Well, I had just got out from the county prison
Doin ninety days for non-support
Tried to find me an executive position
But no matter how smooth I talked
8. day 28 - a song that makes you feel guilty
I've never seen you looking so gorgeous as you did tonight,
I've never seen you shine so bright, you were amazing,
I've never seen so many people want to be there by your side,
And when you turned to me and smiled, it took my breath away,
9. day 29 - a song from your childhood
I got married to the widow next door
She's been married seven times before
10. day 30 - your favorite song at this time last year
I've got my ticket for the long way 'round
Two bottle whiskey for the way
And I sure would like some sweet company
And I'm leaving tomorrow. What d'you say?

Re: August LS Day 11: 30 day song challenge, pt 3
Spoiler
1. day 21 - a song that you listen to when you’re happy
Well I woke up this morning stumbled out of my rack
I opened up the paper to the page in the back
It only took a minute for my finger to find
My daily dose of destiny, under my sign
LB's Pick: I love how the people who write these challenges think everyone has "mood music." I'd bet there are more people who don't listen to certain music based on their mood than those who do. I'll just pick one of my happy songs... Funky Town - Pseudo Echo
2. day 22 - a song that you listen to when you’re sad
Light up your face with gladness
Hide every trace of sadness,
Although a tear may be ever so near,
That's the time you must keep on trying,
LB's Pick: I Will Remember You - Sara McLaughlin (It doesn't just make puppies sad, it makes me cringe when I hear it...)
3. day 23 - a song that you want to play at your wedding
I guess when you met me it was just one of those things.
But don't ever bet me 'cause I'm gonna be true if you let me.
LB's Pick: Stupid Girl - Garbage
4. day 24 - a song that you want to play at your funeral
But when ye come, and all the flow’rs are dyin’
If I am dead, as dead I well may be
Ye’ll come and find the place where I am lyin’
And kneel and say an Ave there for me.
LB's Pick: If I'm playing music at my own funeral... please don't bury me! I could give a shit less what anyone plays once I'm dead. Since I'll soon be in the ground, let's go with a fitting song that also makes me want to kill myself when I hear it... Ants Marching - Dave Matthews Band
5. day 25 - a song that makes you laugh
Take your cigarette from its holder,
And burn your initials in my shoulder.
Fracture my spine,
And swear that you're mine,
LB's Pick: Jizz In My Pants - The Lonely Island (I can't count how many times I've seen the video, and it still busts my ass up every time...)
6. day 26 - a song that you can play on an instrument
The storms are raging on the rollin' sea
And on the highway of regrets
The winds of change are blowing wild and free
You ain't seen nothin' like me yet.
LB's Pick: Twinkle Twinkle Little Star - Every little kid (I'm better off listening to music than trying to play it...)
7. day 27 - a song that you wish you could play
Well, I had just got out from the county prison
Doin ninety days for non-support
Tried to find me an executive position
But no matter how smooth I talked
LB's Pick: Dr Wily Stages 1 and 2 - Mega Man 2
This is widely regarded as the greatest 8-bit video game theme ever composed, and I'd certainly be inclined to agree with that consensus. When I was given a keyboard a few years ago (long since mothballed to the hoarder room), I tried to learn a lot of my old favorite NES themes I remembered from back in the day. There were some I could plod through without hitting too many wrong notes, but this one was impossible for me to learn. It is, however, an absolute work of computerized music genius that I very much wish I could have played.
8. day 28 - a song that makes you feel guilty
I've never seen you looking so gorgeous as you did tonight,
I've never seen you shine so bright, you were amazing,
I've never seen so many people want to be there by your side,
And when you turned to me and smiled, it took my breath away,
Lady in Red - Chris DeBurgh (OMG! I got an actual song in the game right!)
LB's Pick: Captain Jack - Billy Joel (This is about a stupid ass challenge question... but hey, I did tease Clem quite a bit with this song back in the 2009 LSWE, and I almost feel sorry for that.... almost....)
9. day 29 - a song from your childhood
I got married to the widow next door
She's been married seven times before
Henry the 8th I Am - Herman's Hermits
LB's Pick: Hot Cherie - Danny Spanos (One of many great rock songs that was played all the time on 106.5 KWK, which my folks listened to when I was a kid in the early 80's, but which nobody not from around here has a clue about because it was just a regional hit...)
10. day 30 - your favorite song at this time last year
I've got my ticket for the long way 'round
Two bottle whiskey for the way
And I sure would like some sweet company
And I'm leaving tomorrow. What d'you say?
Cups (Something like Pitch perfect When I'm Gone in parenthetical) - Anna Kendrick
LB's Pick: I could go with the obvious Mr. Thicke song, but I'll instead focus on the Mecca CD which was playing at this time last year... the Summer CD. And the best song on it hands down was Brokenhearted - Karmin
Well I woke up this morning stumbled out of my rack
I opened up the paper to the page in the back
It only took a minute for my finger to find
My daily dose of destiny, under my sign

I KNOW this is somewhere on my iPod, but no go../Highway Star-Deep Purple
2. day 22 - a song that you listen to when you’re sad
Light up your face with gladness
Hide every trace of sadness,
Although a tear may be ever so near,
That's the time you must keep on trying,
Smile-I like Nat King Cole's version/Afterglow-Genesis
3. day 23 - a song that you want to play at your wedding
I guess when you met me it was just one of those things.
But don't ever bet me 'cause I'm gonna be true if you let me.
Come Rain or Come Shine-Judy Garland, among a vast and varied number of artists/the one actually played at our wedding was John Michael Montgomery's "I Swear", although the version was done by my wife and me...she had secretly added harmonies to a karaoke recording I had done. I thought we would be hearing the JMM version...No, nobody got up and left....
4. day 24 - a song that you want to play at your funeral
But when ye come, and all the flow’rs are dyin’
If I am dead, as dead I well may be
Ye’ll come and find the place where I am lyin’
And kneel and say an Ave there for me.
Danny Boy-I'm gonna go with Off Kilter's rockin' the bagpipes version. Off Kilter is a Celtic Rock band that plays daily at the Canadian pavilion in Disney World's EPCOT Center. Yes, it is available on a CD/mine is Into the Mystic-Van Morrison.
5. day 25 - a song that makes you laugh
Take your cigarette from its holder,
And burn your initials in my shoulder.
Fracture my spine,
And swear that you're mine,
Masochism Tango-Tom Lehrer/Hunting Tigers in "Indiah"-Bonzo Dog Band and I'd also like to give props to Cheese and Onions by the Rutles.
6. day 26 - a song that you can play on an instrument
The storms are raging on the rollin' sea
And on the highway of regrets
The winds of change are blowing wild and free
You ain't seen nothin' like me yet.
To Make You Feel My Love-written by Dylan, recorded versions by Billy Joel, Garth Brooks, and Adele/my proudest moment was deciphering the riff to Black Dog by Led Zeppelin
7. day 27 - a song that you wish you could play
Well, I had just got out from the county prison
Doin ninety days for non-support
Tried to find me an executive position
But no matter how smooth I talked
Workin' At the Car Wash Blues-Jim Croce/Have You Ever Loved a Woman-Derek and the Dominoes. If I could rip off Clapton's solo on that one, I'd overthrow Leonardo as King of the World.
8. day 28 - a song that makes you feel guilty
I've never seen you looking so gorgeous as you did tonight,
I've never seen you shine so bright, you were amazing,
I've never seen so many people want to be there by your side,
And when you turned to me and smiled, it took my breath away,
/The Lady in Red-Chris DeBurgh/Cat's in the Cradle-Harry Chapin. That song would make Ward Cleaver feel like a deadbeat dad.
9. day 29 - a song from your childhood
I got married to the widow next door
She's been married seven times before
I'm Henry VIII, I Am-Herman's Hermits/Crooked Little Man-Serendipity Singers
10. day 30 - your favorite song at this time last year

Two bottle whiskey for the way

8. day 28 - a song that makes you feel guilty
MrK: The Lady in Red - Chris deBurgh
ME: Electric Avenue - Eddy Grant or Artificial Flowers - Bobby Darin
They are both so CATCHY, it's hard not to sing along.
One is about poverty and a race riot in London; the other is about child labor in a 1910 NYC slum.
9. day 29 - a song from your childhood
MrK: I'm Henry the VII, I am
ME: A medley of When the Red, Red Robin Comes Bob-bob-bobbin' Along, The Gang That Sang Heart of My Heart and Those Wedding Bells Are Breaking Up That Old Gang Of Mine.
A backstory -- When TLAF's family would get together in my grandparents' yard, my uncles would hook up a big-spindle 45 record player on extension cords so we could play records outside. When the evening came around and the teenagers left, they would put on 45s of Mitch Miller and the Gang. On the bus home, THFD, TLAF and I would sing. Softly but still sing. We always put these three songs together.
Sometimes, when I want to cheer up TLAF, I will sing this medley to her and she will sing along with me.

Re: August LS Day 11: 30 day song challenge, pt 3
This is bad...
1. Day 21 - a song that you listen to when you’re happy -- I already used Pharrell Williams' "Happy" last week, so I'll go with King Floyd's "Groove Me" this week.
nope
2. Day 22 - a song that you listen to when you’re sad -- "Send in the Clowns", Judy Collins
nope
3. Day 23 - a song that you want to play at your wedding -- "All My Life", K-Ci & JoJo. I picked that song because it was played at my first wedding.
nope
4. Day 24 - a song that you want to play at your funeral -- "More Than I Can Say", Leo Sayer
nope
5. Day 25 - a song that makes you laugh -- "Junk Food Junkie", Larry Groce
nope
6. Day 26 - a song that you can play on an instrument -- I can play "Let It Be" by the Beatles on the piano.
"To Make You Feel My Love", Bob Dylan or Billy Joel
7. Day 27 - a song that you wish you could play -- "The Entertainer", Scott Joplin or Marvin Hamlisch
"Working at the Car Wash Blues", Jim Croce
8. Day 28 - a song that makes you feel guilty -- "Sacred Emotion", Donny Osmond. I feel guilty for liking any song sung by an Osmond.
"Lady in Red", Chris DeBurgh
9. Day 29 - a song from your childhood -- Anything from before 1990 works here. But officially, I'll say "We Don't Talk Anymore" by Cliff Richard.
"I'm Henry the Eighth I Am", Herman's Hermits
10. Day 30 - your favorite song at this time last year -- "Get Lucky", Daft Punk & Pharrell Williams. It was the song of the summer last year... at least that's what Colbert said.
nope

Spoiler
[quote="mrkelley23"]August LS Day 11 – Thirty Day Song Challenge, pt.
My pick: It's a Brazzle Dazzle Day, Helen Reddy, Sean Marshall, and Mickey Rooney
2. day 22 - a song that you listen to when you’re sad
Light up your face with gladness
Hide every trace of sadness,
Although a tear may be ever so near,
That's the time you must keep on trying,
Smile, Charlie Chaplin
My pick: Morning has broken, Cat Stevens
3. day 23 - a song that you want to play at your wedding
I guess when you met me it was just one of those things.
But don't ever bet me 'cause I'm gonna be true if you let me.
My pick: There is love, Gail Abbott. I mean ... I dunno what I mean. I'm hearing a soprano sing it, but that's probably because Gail is a soprano. Somebody y'all might know, on the other hand . . . I can't hear any famous voices singing it that I can identify. Onward!
4. day 24 - a song that you want to play at your funeral
But when ye come, and all the flow’rs are dyin’
If I am dead, as dead I well may be
Ye’ll come and find the place where I am lyin’
And kneel and say an Ave there for me.
Danny Boy, Celtic Woman
My pick: Jean, Oliver. Since it already sounds like a dirge.
5. day 25 - a song that makes you laugh
Take your cigarette from its holder,
And burn your initials in my shoulder.
Fracture my spine,
And swear that you're mine,
My pick: You may be right, Billy Joel
6. day 26 - a song that you can play on an instrument
The storms are raging on the rollin' sea
And on the highway of regrets
The winds of change are blowing wild and free
You ain't seen nothin' like me yet.
My pick: The piccolo part to Stars and Stripes forever. Hm. No lyrics. Oh well. Onward.
7. day 27 - a song that you wish you could play
Well, I had just got out from the county prison
Doin ninety days for non-support
Tried to find me an executive position
But no matter how smooth I talked
I got those steadily depressin, low down mind messin
Workin at the Car Wash Blues. Jim Croce.
My pick: Take Five, Dave Brubeck.
8. day 28 - a song that makes you feel guilty
I've never seen you looking so gorgeous as you did tonight,
I've never seen you shine so bright, you were amazing,
I've never seen so many people want to be there by your side,
And when you turned to me and smiled, it took my breath away,
The Lady in Red, Stevie Wonder
My pick: Purple People Eater, Sheb Wooley
9. day 29 - a song from your childhood
I got married to the widow next door
She's been married seven times before
Henry the VIIIth, Herman' Hermits
My pick: You Ain't Nothing but a Hound Dog, Elvis Presley. It was banned at our house because my brother wouldn't stop singing it.
10. day 30 - your favorite song at this time last year
I've got my ticket for the long way 'round
Two bottle whiskey for the way
And I sure would like some sweet company
And I'm leaving tomorrow. What d'you say?
My pick: All Summer Long, Kid Rock

Re: August LS Day 11: 30 day song challenge, pt 3
I'm trying, Marley, really I am.
1. day 21 - a song that you listen to when you’re happy

MY CHOICE: "Steal My Sunshine" - Len
2. day 22 - a song that you listen to when you’re sad
Light up your face with gladness
Hide every trace of sadness,
Although a tear may be ever so near,
That's the time you must keep on trying,
MY CHOICE: "God Help the Outcasts" - Bette Midler (from "The Hunchback of Notre Dame")
3. day 23 - a song that you want to play at your wedding
I guess when you met me it was just one of those things.
But don't ever bet me 'cause I'm gonna be true if you let me.
MY CHOICE: "Kiss the Girl" - Samuel E. Wright (from "The Little Mermaid")
4. day 24 - a song that you want to play at your funeral
But when ye come, and all the flow’rs are dyin’
If I am dead, as dead I well may be
Ye’ll come and find the place where I am lyin’
And kneel and say an Ave there for me.
MY CHOICE: "Babe" - Styx

August LS Day 11 – Thirty Day Song Challenge, pt. 3
The last ten days of the thirty day song challenge – I have one more Monday, but I think I have an idea for that day. If anyone has any song challenge ideas, though, send them to me, and if I get enough, I”ll put that other game in the bank and use it next time. Today’s songs are a bit of a stretch for me, but I’ve given my most honest answers here – identify the title and artist for one point each. Give your answer to the challenge for an additional bonus point.
1. day 21 - a song that you listen to when you’re happy
Well I woke up this morning stumbled out of my rack
I opened up the paper to the page in the back
It only took a minute for my finger to find
My daily dose of destiny, under my sign
I Feel Lucky – Mary Chapin Carpenter
2. day 22 - a song that you listen to when you’re sad
Light up your face with glad ness
Hide every trace of sadness,
Although a tear may be ever so near,
That's the time you must keep on trying,
Smile – I, too, like the Nat King Cole version, but I was surprised and pleased by the Michael Jackson version they played on SYTYCD the other night.
3. day 23 - a song that you want to play at your wedding
I guess when you met me it was just one of those things.
But don't ever bet me 'cause I'm gonna be true if you let me.
Come Rain or Come Shine – every belt alto who ever auditioned for a show in the 70s or 80s. Obviously, I’m hoping never to have to plan another wedding, but if I did, the lyrics from this one hit home with me
4. day 24 - a song that you want to play at your funeral
But when ye come, and all the flow’rs are dyin’
If I am dead, as dead I well may be
Ye’ll come and find the place where I am lyin’
And kneel and say an Ave there for me.
Danny Boy – All kinds of people, although I enjoy John McCormack probably the most. I don’t plan on having a funeral, but I’m leaving that up to my family. If I do, or if there’s a wake, this better be played, or I will haunt them.
5. day 25 - a song that makes you laugh
Take your cigarette from its holder,
And burn your initials in my shoulder.
Fracture my spine,
And swear that you're mine,
The Masochism Tango – Tom Lehrer. There aren’t many Lehrer songs that don’t make me laugh.
6. day 26 - a song that you can play on an instrument
The storms are raging on the rollin' sea
And on the highway of regrets
The winds of change are blowing wild and free
You ain't seen nothin' like me yet.
To Make You Feel My Love – the Garth Brooks version was the first I became acquainted with. I’ve now heard the Dylan version (like it) and the Billy Joel Version (hate it – maybe my least favorite thing he’s ever done). I play AT both piano and acoustic guitar. If it has a chord chart, I can play most anything, but not lead. This simple song is the first one I taught myself, and I have achieved some semblance of proficiency at not merely banging chords to accompany my singing.
7. day 27 - a song that you wish you could play
Well, I had just got out from the county prison
Doin ninety days for non-support
Tried to find me an executive position
But no matter how smooth I talked
Working at the Car Wash Blues – Jim Croce. I think Croce is one of the more underrated guitar players, maybe because he played acoustic. The chord progressions and lead licks he plays on this song intimidate me.
8. day 28 - a song that makes you feel guilty
I've never seen you looking so gorgeous as you did tonight,
I've never seen you shine so bright, you were amazing,
I've never seen so many people want to be there by your side,
And when you turned to me and smiled, it took my breath away,
Lady in Red – Chris DeBurgh. From a brief disastrous destructive relationship between the divorce and my love.
9. day 29 - a song from your childhood
I got married to the widow next door
She's been married seven times before
I’m Henry VIII I Am – Herman’s Hermits. Pretty hard to find a piece of lyric that doesn’t include the title in this one. I apparently would sing this song at family gatherings at the drop of a hat.
10. day 30 - your favorite song at this time last year
I've got my ticket for the long way 'round
Two bottle whiskey for the way
And I sure would like some sweet company
And I'm leaving tomorrow. What d'you say?
Cups (You’re gonna miss me, from Pitch Perfect) – Anna Kendrick. Again with the whole favorite thing, but this one did get played an awful lot last year, and I never got tired of it, so there’s that.

Meant to put on bonus points for those who suggested song challenge ideas for the next Monday. I'll add them in when I do the standings later. Thanks everyone for the suggestions, they were great, and I"m going to use them!
