August LS Day 7: Tough Tuesday

#1 Post by mrkelley23 » Tue Aug 12, 2014 5:11 am

August Lyrically Speaking Day 7 Tough Tuesday

What’s tougher than a Frank Tangredi movie game with 250 clues, 8 of which will be used twice, 3 which will be used 4 times, and 1 which will be used 7 times, all in a different capacity? Why, it’s Tough Tuesday, of course! Identify the following 12 songs, one point for title, one for artist. Then see if you can figure out the unifying factor that ties them all together. Five points if you can figure out the theme, and an additional 2 points krox bonus if you can name another title-artist combination that fits the theme. Hint 1: Remember that I am not as good as Frank at making things work perfectly with respect to spelling and such. Hint 2: A couple of these songs may even make Marley happy. Good luck!

1. There's a stranger in my bed,
There's a pounding in my head
Glitter all over the room
Pink flamingos in the pool
I smell like a minibar
DJ's passed out in the yard

2. He gave three moans,
of mortal pain,
Barfed up those shirts,
and flagged that train.
The Engineer,
got out to see,
What in the world,
this thing could be.

3. We were together since we were five
She was so pretty
**** was a star in everyone's eyes.
And when she said she'd be a movie queen nobody laughed;
A face like an angel, she could be anything.

4. Now... what y'all wanna do?
Wanna be ballers? Shot-callers?
Brawlers -- who be dippin in the Benz wit the spoilers
On the low from the Jake in the Taurus
Tryin to get my hands on some Grants like Horace
Yeah livin the raw deal, three course meals
Spaghetti, fettucini, and veal

5. Nightingale, blackbird,
How is it you sing?
How can you jubilate,
Sitting in cages,
Never taking wing?
Outside the sky waits,
Beckoning, beckoning,

6. I'm glad you're home, well, did you really miss me?
I guess you did by the look in your eye
(Look in your eye, look in your eye)
Well, lay back and relax, while I put away the dishes
(Away the dishes)

7. You mean I've been dancin' on the floor darlin'
And I feel like I need some more and I
Feel your body close to mine and I
Move on love it's about that time

8. Oh twice as much ain't twice as good
And can't sustain like one have could
It's wanting more
That's gonna send me to my knees

9. She crossed the big mountains with her lover Ike
With two yoke of oxen and a big yellow dog
And a tall Shanghai rooster and one spottled hog.
Didli ai di ai didl didli ai di ai dei

10. [Girl 1] Excuse me, can I please talk to you for a minute
[Girl 2] uh huh, sure, you know you look kinda familiar
[Girl 1] Yeah, you do too but, umm,
I just wanted to know do you know
somebody named you,
you know his name.
[Girl 2] Oh, yeah definitely I know his name.

11. It's a fool's game
Nothing but a fools game
Standing in the cold rain
Feeling like a clown

12. I went out a dancing with a Tennessee dear
They had a fellow named Handy with a band you should hear
And while the folks gently swayed
All them boys began to play in real harmony

Theme?
For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled. -- Richard Feynman

1. "Last Friday Night", Katy Perry

3. "Emma", Hot Chocolate
4. "All About the Benjamins", Diddy (back when he was called Puff Daddy)
5. nope
6. "Ring My Bell", Anita Ward

8. "Gravity", John Mayer
9. nope
10. "The Boy Is Mine", Brandy & Monica

Standing in the cold rain
Feeling like a clown

It's a Heartache - Bonnie Tyler

They had a fellow named Handy with a band you should hear
And while the folks gently swayed
All them boys began to play in real harmony

Spoiler
Well I'm starting in the whole because I haven't been here in a few weeks. Nice to see mrkelley hosting a game.

1.
2.
3. Emmaline (sp?), Hot Chocolate
4. It's all about the Benjamins, Notorious BIG
5.
6.
7.
8.
9. Sweet Betsy from Pike, _______
We sang this one in grade school.

10. Eugene?
11. It's a Heartache, Bonnie Tyler
12.
Theme? First names in the titles. But then I would have to be wrong about #11.
Krox: Gloria, the Shadows of Knight

Edited because I forgot the spoiler

DJ's passed out in the yard Last Friday Night (TGIF) – Katy Perry (TG Culpepper)

2. He gave three moans,
of mortal pain,
Barfed up those shirts,
and flagged that train.
The Engineer,
got out to see,
What in the world,
this thing could be. Bill Grogan’s Goat -- traditional (Smiler Grogan)

3. We were together since we were five
She was so pretty
**** was a star in everyone's eyes.
And when she said she'd be a movie queen nobody laughed;
A face like an angel, she could be anything. Emmaline – Hot Chocolate (Emeline Marcus-Finch)

4. Now... what y'all wanna do?
Wanna be ballers? Shot-callers?
Brawlers -- who be dippin in the Benz wit the spoilers
On the low from the Jake in the Taurus
Tryin to get my hands on some Grants like Horace
Yeah livin the raw deal, three course meals
Spaghetti, fettucini, and veal All about the benjamins -- Puff Daddy (Benjy Benjamin)

5. Nightingale, blackbird,
How is it you sing?
How can you jubilate,
Sitting in cages,
Never taking wing?
Outside the sky waits,
Beckoning, beckoning, Green finch and linnet bird -- from Sweeney todd (J. Russell Finch)

6. I'm glad you're home, well, did you really miss me?
I guess you did by the look in your eye
(Look in your eye, look in your eye)
Well, lay back and relax, while I put away the dishes
(Away the dishes) Ring my bell -- Anita Ward (Ding Bell)

7. You mean I've been dancin' on the floor darlin'
And I feel like I need some more and I
Feel your body close to mine and I
Move on love it's about that time You Make me Feel (Mighty Real) – Sylvester (Sylvester Marcus)

8. Oh twice as much ain't twice as good
And can't sustain like one have could
It's wanting more
That's gonna send me to my knees Gravity -- John Mayer song (Otto Meyer) Couldn't come up with anyone well known at all spelled the right way.

9. She crossed the big mountains with her lover Ike
With two yoke of oxen and a big yellow dog
And a tall Shanghai rooster and one spottled hog.
Didli ai di ai didl didli ai di ai dei Sweet Betsy from Pike -- Traditional (Johnny Cash did the version I quoted here) (Lennie Pike)

The Boy is Mine -- Monica (Monica Crump)

11. It's a fool's game
Nothing but a fools game
Standing in the cold rain
Feeling like a clown It's a Heartache -- Bonnie Tyler (Tyler Fitzgerald)

12. I went out a dancing with a Tennessee dear
They had a fellow named Handy with a band you should hear
And while the folks gently swayed
All them boys began to play in real harmony Memphis Blues (or Mr. Crump) -- Louis Armstrong (Melville Crump)

Theme? I know it's not really fair but I really wanted to see if I could work it into a Lyrically Speaking game. The names in parentheses after each answer are the character names of 12 of the characters in the original It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. I have to say original now because imdb informs me that there is a sequel in the works, slated for release next summer. I'll believe it when I see it...

Points:

mntetn ---- 8
estonut ----- 9
vandal ----- 4
TLITF ----- 16
AD ---- 4
elwood ---- 2
jarnon ---- 2 + 2 for the pic
Marley ----- 0 + 2 for actually guessing
TBone ----- 4
HotSeat ---- 2
Sprots ----- 2 (although you're surely not the first to mistake Bonnie Tyler for Rod Stewart, and vice versa.)
Fireball ----- 16 + 2 for a good guess at a theme.
Frank ---- 8 (I figured you had the best shot of anyone, since you would likely know the Sweeney Todd song.)
krox ------ 1
BiT ----- 0
lb13 -- 4 (I was going to give you humor points, until you reminded me of my poor Quarks Maybe my worst season ever.)

Ok, the next two days should be easier, and even next Tuesday's game should be more do-able.

Not that one point is gonna make such a big difference (it's not going to make any difference at all, actually), but RadioDude plays the Rod Stewart version, and that's what I'm stuck with.
