Hatteras Island evacuated

Arthur's messing-up some folk's vacation week. Peak winds are supposed to be up to 85 MPH.
I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I needed to be.

I have some friends who have a house down there, and they just posted on Facebook they're going to ride it out.

Let's hope that it's not a foolish decision. Even if the house survives, I've seen roads get messed up in hurricanes (not to mention utilities and supplies).

Arthur is now a Cat 1 hurricane and is battering the South Carolina coast from Charleston to Myrtle Beach.

So glad I got out of NC yesterday. Even then the delays were bad due to weather in Hartford but they were cancelling flights due to thunderstorms.

Today it would have been worse for other reasons.

Not here in Raleigh. We can't tell there's anything abnormal --- yet --- the rain won't be here until about 6 PM. It's humid as hell though.

Yeah, and it was crystal clear in BWI yesterday when my flight was delayed due to weather so I am sure a hurricane nearby will not have any effect on flights in the area.

Put a Hurricane alert together with the 4th and what do you get?

I just got word to bring hotdogs and buns to the beach as the stores are cleaned out of them

The National Hurricane Center is forecasting Hurricane Arthur will become a Category 2 storm when it passes near North Carolina late Thursday. Arthur now has sustained winds of 90 mph and is about 233 miles south of Raleigh.

There's a tornado warning south of Tarboro now.

So far the only known casualty tonight has been "Jeopardy!"

It could be worse. One of the local stations pulled "Dr Phil" because of weather reports, including a tornado warning, a few years ago, and opened up a phone bank for folks to call in to report what was happening in their neighborhood. Pretty much 70% of the calls were folks beefing that they'd taken off "Dr. Phil."
