The Ultimate QoD Challenge -- Week 8, Thursday

#1 Post by Pastor Fireball » Thu Jun 05, 2014 5:03 am

"Ten!"

We haven't done any Thursday TV trivia yet, so let's do that to close out the Level 2 questions.

"This Week in Unnecessary Censorship"

Over the years, I've made many references to this long-running sketch from Jimmy Kimmel. (Recall my contribution to ShamelessWeasel's Lyrically Speaking a few months ago.) I don't know if Kimmel still does that, but every week, he paid tribute to the FCC by bleeping and blurring things on TV, whether they needed it or not. The joke was that he censored some of the most inocuous things on TV--local news, game shows, religious programming, even "Sesame Street". Of course, "Sesame Street" might need legitimate censoring after the Kevin Clash scandal last year.

Today, I'm going to perform unnecessary censorship on some of TV's most recognizable phrases. For each TV phrase below, simply undo my bleeps and give me the proper words that complete them. Don't forget your bet on tomorrow's "Fat Chance" TV question.

Answers are due by Friday at 4 PM EDT.

1. "Dragnet": "All we want are the (bleep)."
2. "Jerry Springer": "Take care of yourselves and (bleep) (bleep)."
3. "Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In": "You bet your sweet (bleep)!"
4. "The Mary Tyler Moore Show": "A little song, a little dance, a little (bleep) down your pants."
5. "The Daily Show": "Here it is, your moment of (bleep)."
6. "Family Guy": "Shut up, (bleep)!"
7. "Pyramid": "For $100,000, here is your first subject... (bleep)!"
8. "WKRP in Cincinnati": "More music, (bleep) (bleep)."
9. "MADtv": "He looka like a (bleep)."
10. "Good Eats": "Stuffing is (bleep)."

Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

1. "Dragnet": "All we want are the (bleep)." -- facts

Contrary to popular belief, Jack Webb never said the exact phrase "Just the facts, ma'am" in any episode of "Dragnet". You're thinking of a popular 1953 "Dragnet" parody by Stan Freberg. Originally, I was going to do the "Dragnet" question as the Fat Chance to see how many people would forfeit on "Just the facts, ma'am"... but then I came up with a much more interesting question. You'll see that in a few minutes.

2. "Jerry Springer": "Take care of yourselves and (bleep) (bleep)." -- each other

3. "Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In": "You bet your sweet (bleep)!" -- bippy

It's not "donkey", as I suggested a few weeks ago. :D

4. "The Mary Tyler Moore Show": "A little song, a little dance, a little (bleep) down your pants." -- seltzer

From the legendary Chuckles the Clown episode.

5. "The Daily Show": "Here it is, your moment of (bleep)." -- zen

6. "Family Guy": "Shut up, (bleep)!" -- Meg

Certainly, other characters on that show have been told to shut up, but Meg is almost always the recipient of that demand.

7. "Pyramid": "For $100,000, here is your first subject... (bleep)!" -- GO!

8. "WKRP in Cincinnati": "More music, (bleep) (bleep)." -- Les Nessman

9. "MADtv": "He looka like a (bleep)." -- man

This is the line frequently uttered by Miss Swan, a stereotypical Asian woman played by Alex Borstein. Alex rehashes this voice as Asian reporter Tricia Takanawa on "Family Guy".

10. "Good Eats": "Stuffing is (bleep)." -- evil

A Thanksgiving tradition on my Facebook page is my posting a picture of Alton Brown with this phrase.

6/2 + 6/3 + 6/4 + 6/5 Scores (8 participants)
Bob Juch - 14 + 24 + 16 + 64 = 118
ShamelessWeasel - 6 + 16 + 8 + 64 = 94
smilergrogan - 2 + 6 + 12 + 40 = 60
kroxquo - 4 + 2 + 8 + 40 = 54
Bob78164 - 2 + 8 + 0 + 40 = 50
franktangredi - 0 + 0 + 0 + 40 = 40
themanintheseersuckersuit - 2 + 2 + 0 + 24 = 28
jarnon - 2 + 8 + 0 + 16 = 26
