The Ultimate QoD Challenge -- Week 7, Friday

#1 Post by Pastor Fireball » Fri May 30, 2014 5:40 pm

If they asked me, I could wrote a book. Unfortunately, it wouldn't sell any copies because it wouldn't have steamy sex on every page.

kroxquo - 96% of 20 = 19.2
themanintheseersuckersuit - 33 1/3% of 38 = 12.67
franktangredi - 25% of 44 = 11
Bob Juch - 10% of 106 = 10.6
smilergrogan - 10% of 40 = 4
Bob78164 - 10% of 26 = 2.6
jarnon - 10% of 20 = 2
ShamelessWeasel - 0% of 42 = 0

For the first time, nobody is going all-in. krox is leaving himself eight-tenths of a point, just in case. Let's see if any of you have read this book.

Name one mode of transportation that Phileas Fogg used in Jules Verne's classic novel Around the World in 80 Days.

Your answer is due by Monday 6/2 at 4 PM EDT.

He definitely did NOT travel by balloon, and I might try and cheat by saying by foot since I am pretty sure he walked at least part of the distance, but I will go with steam ship which he had to disassemble to provide fuel for the boiler.

Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

Hot air balloon, right? Only if you're watching the classic David Niven movie. Or the awful Jackie Chan remake. There were no hot air balloons in the novel.

The only forms of transportation used by Fogg in the novel were boats and trains.

Although TMITSSS was the only person to go with the obvious answer, he thankfully didn't bet it all this week. Everybody stayed in the black, so everybody gets a 2 point bonus.

Week 7 Scores
Bob Juch - 18 + 36 + 12 + 40 + 10.6 (+ 2) = 118.6
franktangredi - 4 + 12 + 12 + 16 + 11 (+ 2) = 57
ShamelessWeasel - 4 + 14 + 8 + 16 + 0 (+ 2) = 44
smilergrogan - 6 + 10 + 8 + 16 + 0 (+ 2) = 42
kroxquo - 2 + 10 + 0 + 8 + 19.2 (+ 2) = 41.2
Bob78164 - 4 + 6 + 0 + 16 + 2.6 (+ 2) = 30.6
themanintheseersuckersuit - 10 + 8 + 12 + 8 - 12.67 (+ 2) = 27.33
jarnon - 2 + 10 + 0 + 8 + 2 (+ 2) = 24

I protest:

from Chapter XI, "In Which Phileas Fogg Secures a Curious Means of Conveyance at a Fabulous Price",
Passepartout: "Monsieur, I think I have found a means of conveyance."
Fogg: "What?"
Passepartout: "An elephant! An elephant that belongs to an Indian who lives but a hundred steps from here."

I demand my 4 points!
