Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

The five who played this round managed to get a few points on the board.

Grid 1:

ALEXANDER | ATLAS | BELL | CARVER
COOKIE | DAWSON | GUY | HAYS
HERB | JENNER | JULIUS | LITTLE
MASON | MORSE | WAGSTAFF | ZIP

Lots of inventors, famous Richards, and jars in this grid. It probably shouldn't surprise you that the perfect solution included none of those categories.

1. GUY | HAYS | MORSE | ZIP

_____ code. The Hays Code concerned censorship in motion pictures between the 1930s-1960s.

2. ALEXANDER | COOKIE | HERB | JULIUS

Characters in the comic strip Blondie. Julius is Mr. Dithers' first name.

3. BELL | CARVER | LITTLE | WAGSTAFF

These were also fictional characters, but in something a little darker than a comic strip.

Characters on "The Wire". Stringer Bell, Ellis Carver, Omar Little, and Randy Wagstaff.

4. ATLAS | DAWSON | JENNER | MASON

I would have doubled over if anybody had spotted this category.

Craters on the Moon.

Grid 2:

BRASS | CHARLESTON | ESCAPE | FOXTROT
GOULASH | HAWK | OSCAR | POCKET
PONG | RED DRAGON | SHOGUN | TANGO
TWIST | WATUSI | WHIRLWIND | WHISKEY

The dances were obvious, but not in the perfect solution.

1. FOXTROT | OSCAR | TANGO | WHISKEY

Everybody got this one. Letters of the NATO phonetic alphabet.

2. BRASS | HAWK | POCKET | TWIST

Charles Dickens characters. Sampson Brass, Sir Mulberry Hawk, Matthew Pocket, and the famous Oliver Twist.

3. ESCAPE | SHOGUN | WATUSI | WHIRLWIND

Things written by James Clavell.

4. CHARLESTON | GOULASH | PONG | RED DRAGON

Mahjongg terms.

5/26 + 5/27 + 5/28 Scores (8 participants)
Bob Juch - 18 + 36 + 12 = 66
themanintheseersuckersuit - 10 + 8 + 12 = 30
franktangredi - 4 + 12 + 12 = 28
ShamelessWeasel - 4 + 14 + 8 = 26
smilergrogan - 6 + 10 + 8 = 24
jarnon - 2 + 10 + 0 = 12
kroxquo - 2 + 10 + 0 = 12
Bob78164 - 4 + 6 + 0 = 10
