The Ultimate QoD Challenge -- Week 6, Friday

#1 Post by Pastor Fireball » Fri May 23, 2014 8:52 pm

Since I was busy playing Buzztime Trivia today and since this is Memorial Day weekend, you'll have extra time to ponder today's question. Those perfectly grilled Fat Chance bets look like this:

Bob Juch - 50% of 86 = 43
themanintheseersuckersuit - 100% of 42 = 42
kroxquo - 48% of 58 = 27.84
franktangredi - 40% of 60 = 24
jarnon - 25% of 36 = 9
Bob78164 - 10% of 42 = 4.2
smilergrogan - 5% of 62 = 3.1
christie1111 - 0% of 12 = 0
ShamelessWeasel - 0% of 82 = 0

Only TMITSSS is betting it all this time. And while we're on the subject of "grilled", I want to know...

Who expected the Spanish Inquisition?

Your answer is due by Tuesday 5/27 at 4 PM EDT.

I'm not sure what you're going for, but in the Monty Python sketch, it was Graham Chapman who said it first, then later in the show, Carol Cleveland.

I hope you're going to a straight answer:

Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

Who expected the Spanish Inquisition?

Monty Python was historically inaccurate. "Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!" or anything similar to "nobody" was a forfeit. I know it was tempting to say it, but you had to avoid it.

When it comes to the real Spanish Inquisition of the 15th-19th centuries, everybody was given a 30-day notice that they would be interrogated. That way, all of the suspects could have time to gather evidence to prove to the inquisitors that they were not heretics or Muslims or whatever the crime of the day was. So the correct answer is everybody expected the Spanish Inquisition. Especially anybody who was directly involved in the Inquisition, like Torquemada, Pedro de Arbués, Pope Sixtus IV, and Ferdinand & Isabella.

The Monty Python sketch cost TMITSSS all of his points for the week. The other 8 players split the 18 points in the bonus pool.

Week 6 Scores
Bob Juch - 14 + 20 + 12 + 40 + 43 (+ 2.25) = 131.25
franktangredi - 6 + 6 + 8 + 40 + 24 (+ 2.25) = 86.25
ShamelessWeasel - 2 + 24 + 8 + 48 + 0 (+ 2.25) = 84.25
smilergrogan - 8 + 14 + 8 + 32 + 3.1 (+ 2.25) = 67.35
kroxquo - 2 + 8 + 0 + 48 + 0 (+ 2.25) = 60.25
Bob78164 - 0 + 10 + 0 + 32 + 4.2 (+ 2.25) = 48.45
jarnon - 4 + 8 + 0 + 24 - 9 (+ 2.25) = 29.25
christie1111 - 0 + 8 + 4 + 0 + 0 (+ 2.25) = 14.25
themanintheseersuckersuit - 4 + 6 + 0 + 32 - 42 = 0
