The Ultimate QoD Challenge -- Week 6, Tuesday

#1 Post by Pastor Fireball » Tue May 20, 2014 4:59 am

"The Fourth Element"

As you might recall, all of the Tuesday questions present items in a sequence. All you have to do is tell me what comes next in the sequence and why those items make a sequence. 2 points for correctly filling in the blank and 2 points for telling me the category.

Answers are due by Wednesday 5/21 at 4 PM EDT.

1. MONICA / ERICA / RITA / _____
2. NORWAY = BEDROOM SET / SWEDEN = LIVING ROOM SET / FINLAND = DINING ROOM SET / _____
3. 1996: WILKENS / 2000: TOMJANOVICH / 2004: BROWN / _____
4. METHANE / ETHANE / PROPANE / _____
5. SHERI / DONTAE / ADRIANNA / _____
6. #4: A CLUSTER IN SCORPIUS / #3: A CLUSTER IN CANES VENATICI / #2: A CLUSTER IN AQUARIUS / _____
7. MARICOPA / HARRIS / COOK / _____
8. REFUDIATE / SQUEEZED MIDDLE / GIF / _____
9. 1,000: ABRAHAM LINCOLN / 10,000: GROVER CLEVELAND / 100,000: ULYSSES GRANT / _____
10. FLAX = 40 / HAY = 50 / OATS = 60 / _____

Side note: I threw out one of the questions from this stack and replaced it with the one that you see in #9. It was another one of those color-related sequences that are not popular here. The sequence would have been "129 (in brown text) / 134 (in blue text) / 140 (in pink text) / _____". The correct answer would have been "

Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

I suspect a mistake in one of the questions.
1. MONICA / ERICA / RITA / _____
2. NORWAY = BEDROOM SET / SWEDEN = LIVING ROOM SET / FINLAND = DINING ROOM SET / _____
3. 1996: WILKENS / 2000: TOMJANOVICH / 2004: BROWN / _____
4. METHANE / ETHANE / PROPANE / _____ Simple organic gases. Methane has 1 carbon atom (CH4), ethane has 2(CH3CH3), propane has 3 (CH3CH2CH3). Butane.

6. #4: A CLUSTER IN SCORPIUS / #3: A CLUSTER IN CANES VENATICI / #2: A CLUSTER IN AQUARIUS / _____ These are the Messier catalog numbers. I think M-1 is the Crab Nebula.
7. MARICOPA / HARRIS / COOK / _____ These are counties (Phoenix, Houston, Chicago) but I can't figure out the organizing property. I'll guess Kings (Brooklyn).
8. REFUDIATE / SQUEEZED MIDDLE / GIF / _____
9. 1,000: ABRAHAM LINCOLN / 10,000: GROVER CLEVELAND / 100,000: ULYSSES GRANT / _____ Are the second and third reversed? If so, then next is 1,000,000: James Madison (the value in dollars of 200 copies of the U.S. currency on which this president appears).
10. FLAX = 40 / HAY = 50 / OATS = 60 / _____

1. MONICA / ERICA / RITA / TINA

Order of the girls mentioned in the chorus of Lou Bega's "Mambo No. 5".

2. NORWAY = BEDROOM SET / SWEDEN = LIVING ROOM SET / FINLAND = DINING ROOM SET / DENMARK = CARPET

Most of you recognized that this was referring to IKEA kindling--I mean, products. It was simply the Scandinavian naming scheme for IKEA products.

3. 1996: WILKENS / 2000: TOMJANOVICH / 2004: BROWN / 2008: KRZYZEWSKI

Successive coaches of the U.S. men's Olympic basketball team.

4. METHANE / ETHANE / PROPANE / BUTANE

Alkanes, getting progressively more complex.

5. SHERI / DONTAE / ADRIANNA / DON

I guess I was the only one here who watched this reality/competition series.

Order of the first four "deaths" in the first season of ABC's "Whodunnit".

6. #4: A CLUSTER IN SCORPIUS / #3: A CLUSTER IN CANES VENATICI / #2: A CLUSTER IN AQUARIUS / #1: CRAB NEBULA/TAURUS

The first four Messier objects.

7. MARICOPA / HARRIS / COOK / LOS ANGELES

The four most populous U.S. counties in increasing order of population.

8. REFUDIATE / SQUEEZED MIDDLE / GIF / SELFIE

Oxford Dictionaries' "Word of the Year" in the U.S. from 2010-13.

9. 1,000: ABRAHAM LINCOLN / 10,000: GROVER CLEVELAND / 100,000: ULYSSES GRANT / 1,000,000: THEODORE ROOSEVELT

It wasn't U.S. currencies. It was U.S. treasury bonds.

Portraits on U.S. treasury bonds, with the denominations increasing tenfold.

10. FLAX = 40 / HAY = 50 / OATS = 60 / RYE = 70

Points for the four lowest commodities in the classic card game Pit.

Weasel wins this round, but Bob J holds the weekly lead.
