Law and Order SVU Renewed

#1 Post by silverscreenselect » Wed May 07, 2014 9:25 pm

NBC announced today that Law and Order SVU would be renewed for its 16th season. The problem wasn't ratings (the ratings weren't great but were better than most of the dramas NBC has). The show had been bogged down in contractual negotiations between NBC and creator Dick Wolf. With the renewal, SVU becomes the fourth longest network drama behind parent series Law and Order and Gunsmoke, both at 20 seasons, and Lassie at 17 seasons.

Two other NBC series, Believe and Crisis, both airing Sunday nights, don't appear as lucky. The scheduled season finales for both series, which had been scheduled for May 18 (the last Sunday of sweeps) have been pulled in favor of a Saturday Night Live clips retrospective. Don't look for either of those series to return next year. Fox also officially cancelled three first year comedies: Dads, Enlisted, and Surviving Jack, as well as officially cancelling first year drama Rake.

Out with the old, in with the new. Fox and NBC each announced two new series as well:

Empire (Fox): A family drama about a hip hop music mogul with a solid cast including Terence Howard, Taraji P. Henson, Malik Yoba, and Gabourie Sidibe.

Red Band Society (Fox): From Steven Spielberg, a diverse group of teenagers become unlikely friends in the pediatric wing of a hospital, with Octavia Spencer.

Marry Me (NBC): A couple get engaged and find out things aren't as easy as they first thought.

State of Affairs (NBC): CIA Agent Katherine Heigl must brief the president on vital national security issues. This is actually a drama, not a comedy. Alfre Woodard costars.

None of these series sound like must-see TV, and Marry Me sounds like the type of show that gets cancelled after two episodes.

Yay!

I hope they're around five more years. I admit I miss Munch like crazy.

Barba's great -- I hope he's around for the five years.

Is this the same show that when I watched in the early seasons always talked about how SVU detective were rotated out of the department every few years due to the emotional impact of their cases....?

The only reason they rotate out is because they quit the show.

Sounds like most sitcoms (I presume it's a sitcom) since the beginning of TV (or, for that matter, back to the radio days).

Or, for that matter, every post-season recap of The Bachelor/Bachelorette.

Sounds like the UPN drama "Platinum", which ran for only 6 episodes in 2003.
