Suitguy is not bitter.
feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive
The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

My original answer is perfectly legitimate, but there is another equally good alternate. If these are Jay Pritchett's grandchildren in descending age order, then the next name would be LILY. I would think either of these answers should get credit.franktangredi wrote:4. HALEY | ALEX | LUKE | _____

Re: The Ultimate QoD Challenge -- Week 5, Tuesday
A couple of stumpers again, but everybody was able to score some points.
1. BIRTHDAY PARTY | CHEESECAKE | JELLYBEAN | BOOM
Sequence: Words in R.E.M.'s "It's the End of the World as We Know It".
2. CALIFORNIA = 5 | TEXAS = 10 | NEW YORK = 90 | FLORIDA = 75
A couple of you recognized that the numbers referred to interstates, but couldn't quite pin down the sequence I was looking for.
Sequence: The four most populous U.S. states paired with their longest interstate. Bob J's answer doesn't make a proper sequence because, according to the FHWA, I-45 is more heavily traveled within Texas than I-10. That might be because I-45 connects Dallas and Houston, whereas most of I-10 (particularly between El Paso and San Antonio) runs through a lot of empty space.
3. 3 = SOUTHEAST ASIA | 2 = EUROPE & MIDDLE EAST | 1 = U.S.A. & CANADA | 0 = WORLDWIDE
Another one of those things that you've probably seen many times before but never thought about it.
Sequence: DVD region codes in descending numerical order.
4. HALEY | ALEX | LUKE | LILY
Sequence: Jay Pritchett's four grandchildren on "Modern Family". That was the sequence I wanted, but Frank's suggestion also works.
5. FADE | CATERING | AVERSION | (e.g.) FACETIOUS
There were no fewer than nine English words I could have accepted here, but "facetious" and "facetiously" are the most commonly used ones.
Sequence: Words that contain the vowels AE, AEI, AEIO, and AEIOU in that order.
6. MYERS | PACE | MULLEN | DEMPSEY
Sequence: Surnames of Chairmen of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in chronological order.
7. CHINA | KYRGYZSTAN | UZBEKISTAN | TURKMENISTAN
Sequence: Countries bordering Kazakhstan, going clockwise.
8. THERMO | MESO | STRATO | TROPO
Sequence: Prefixes of atmospheric layers, from high to low.
9. JAY-Z'S PROBLEMS | FERRARI FIORANO | NON-EMPLOYEE COMPENSATION TAX FORM | (e.g.) 1600 MINUS 1
Again, multiple correct answers were possible here, as long as you recognized the exact sequence.
Sequence: 99, 599, 1099, 1599.
10. A FLOATING CITY | THE ADVENTURES OF THREE ENGLISHMEN AND THREE RUSSIANS IN SOUTH AFRICA | THE FUR COUNTRY | AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS
Sequence: Jules Verne works in order of publication.
5/5 + 5/6 Scores (8 participants)
Bob Juch - 14 + 20 = 34
