#1 Post by Pastor Fireball » Wed Apr 16, 2014 5:00 am

"4-by-4"

Time to take another swim into my ponds full of red herrings. 2 points for each valid group of four with its valid description, 2 points if you fully solve one grid, and an additional 10 points if you solve both grids perfectly.

A reminder that you may not use any clue more than once.

Answers are due by Thursday at 4 PM EDT.

Spoiler
I got one! Nicole Kidman, Bruno Mars, Barack Obama, Bette Midler = all born in Hawaii and I think maybe all born on Oahu which likely makes it more specifically Honolulu, but not sure about that

Grid 1:

JOHN QUINCY ADAMS | LOUIS ARMSTRONG | RAY BRADBURY | GEORGE H.W. BUSH
BOB DYLAN | ROGER EBERT | ALFRED HITCHCOCK | JOHN F. KENNEDY
NICOLE KIDMAN | BRUNO MARS | BETTE MIDLER | RICHARD NIXON
BARACK OBAMA | PABLO PICASSO | RONALD REAGAN | JOHN WAYNE

A lot of possible categories in this grid, with the six U.S. presidents being the obvious one. There were a couple of perfect solutions available. Here's the one that I had, which avoided the presidents category altogether:

1. NICOLE KIDMAN | BRUNO MARS | BETTE MIDLER | BARACK OBAMA

christie1111 and Frank each saw this one. They were all born in Honolulu, Hawaii.

2. LOUIS ARMSTRONG | GEORGE H.W. BUSH | RONALD REAGAN | JOHN WAYNE

plasticene saw this category, but went with a different valid foursome. They all have airports named after them. These airports are in New Orleans, Houston, Washington, DC, and Santa Ana, CA.

3. RAY BRADBURY | BOB DYLAN | ROGER EBERT | JOHN F. KENNEDY

Pulitzer Prize winners. As far as I know, none of them won two Pulitzers.

4. JOHN QUINCY ADAMS | ALFRED HITCHCOCK | RICHARD NIXON | PABLO PICASSO

Anthony Hopkins film roles. These were his roles in "Amistad", "Hitchcock", "Nixon", and "Surviving Picasso".

Grid 2:

CAN'T STOP DANCIN' | CRAZY IN THE NIGHT | DOO DOO DOO DOO DOO | DRAW OF THE CARDS
GOING TO A GO-GO | LONELY NIGHT | LONG LONG TIME | MIXED EMOTIONS
MORE LOVE | MUSKRAT LOVE | OOH BABY BABY | POOR POOR PITIFUL ME
SHOP AROUND | THE TRACKS OF MY TEARS | TUMBLING DICE | VOYEUR

Nobody took the Smokey Robinson bait. There were four of his songs in this grid... five if you count the slight spelling variation of "Ooo Baby Baby".

1. DOO DOO DOO DOO DOO | GOING TO A GO-GO | MIXED EMOTIONS | TUMBLING DICE

Rolling Stones singles.

2. LONG LONG TIME | OOH BABY BABY | POOR POOR PITIFUL ME | THE TRACKS OF MY TEARS

Linda Ronstadt singles. "Tumbling Dice" was also a Linda Ronstadt single, but it was a distractor as far as getting a perfect score was concerned.

3. CRAZY IN THE NIGHT | DRAW OF THE CARDS | MORE LOVE | VOYEUR

Kim Carnes singles.

4. CAN'T STOP DANCIN' | LONELY NIGHT | MUSKRAT LOVE | SHOP AROUND

Captain & Tennille singles.

You guys have certainly done a good job of proving me wrong this week. Weasel got a perfect 30 points today, making it three consecutive days with at least one perfect score.

4/14 + 4/15 + 4/16 Scores (12 participants)
ShamelessWeasel - 5 + 6 + 30 = 41
Bob Juch - 10 + 15 + 10 = 35
plasticene - 5 + 12 + 10 = 27
franktangredi - 7 + 13 + 6 = 26
smilergrogan - 6 + 8 + 10 = 24
Appa23 - 0 + 20 + 0 = 20
jarnon - 5 + 12 + 0 = 17
Bob78164 - 4 + 8 + 0 = 12
christie1111 - 0 + 10 + 2 = 12
kroxquo - 4 + 6 + 0 = 10
MarleysGh0st - 3 + 6 + 0 = 9
themanintheseersuckersuit - 5 + 4 + 0 = 9
