News About Melly's Honorary Grandson

#1 Post by Spock » Fri Jan 24, 2014 9:39 am

I am thinking the "John Cheney" owl helped.

Just yesterday-the Basketball coach told him he can dress for the varsity basketball team. We are a small school, so take it FWIW, but it is still neat.

He is a 15 YO sophomore and not exactly tall for his age. Last year he played "C" Team which is mostly 9th Graders with a few 8th thrown in. This year he is on JV, which, in theory, is mostly 10th graders, with a few Juniors coming down and a few 8th/9th graders coming up. He gets a lot of playing time in these games.

His specialty is that he is known as a 3-Pt shooter and he is SUPER aggressive on defense and for rebounds and stuff. I have kind of had in the back of my mind that coach might move him up so it wasn't totally a surprise.

I expect he will sit on the bench except for blowout (either way) situations, but it is still really neat. Coach is going deeper into his bench this year than he usually does. There is one other sophomore who "Sits" and a senior who gets to play a little bit. Other than that, he plays everybody on the bench.

I can't decide if I am prouder about this, or the fact that a pretty girl (they are not dating) wanted to wear his football jersey for Homecoming. I think I have to go with the pretty girl, but the basketball thing is pretty cool too (LOL).

He will still get to play on "JV". They are allowed to play in 3 halves a night. So some secondary varsity players play 1 JV half and 2 Varsity halves or vice versa. Same goes for C-Team-1 and 2 halves, whatever the case might be.

So, L'il Spock will play 2 JV halves and hopefully gets a few varsity minutes here and there.

This is really great! A great boost to self-esteem as well. Including the football jersey thing.

Just be careful to get the jersey back before anything important. Like when my son lent his to a girl for a pep rally and then we had to go at some ridiculously early time to retrieve it from her before an away game (or he would have not been allowed on the bus).

Thanks-Could somebody who is friends with Melly on FB please alert her to this. It is right up her alley and "John Chaney" owl, which he got from her at age 3 had to help(LOL)-plus there was the whole Farmboy, Coyotes, John Chaney owl thing.

SPOCKY!

I wanted to reply before but I have been looking for my picture of Little Spock and John Chaney Owl to post it in the reply! I can't find it. :(

It's so funny you posted this. At our last Temple game, we were swapping John Chaney stories with the people who sit in front of us. I mentioned Little Spock and John Chaney Owl and how much I loved writing that story.

Arlene (the wife/mother of the group) said, "I remember that! It's one of my favorite stories! I still have it!."

I can't wait to tell her of Little Spock's basketball exploits this afternoon at the Cincinnati-Temple game. And the football jersey/pretty girl story, too.

Big hugs to my honorary grandkids!

Spocky!

Arlene got a real charge out of Nathan's exploits on the court. She liked knowing what happened to the cute little boy with the owl. :D :D

Most of the smaller schools in NJ have the same JV/varsity set-up and her Patrick did the same thing, as far as suiting up for the varsity.
