Phil Everly of the Everly Brothers has died at the age of 74, his wife reports. He had been battling chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, a result of smoking cigarettes.

I'm sorry to hear that. I was just listening to Crying in the Rain yesterday on Music Choice Solid Gold Oldies. Very enjoyable. They were huge favorites of Rose Jean and Rose Marie, two of my mentors when I was in grade school and they were in high school. They were our cheerleader coaches.

This really hurts. I'm glad I got to see the Brothers a couple times after they rebanded; they weren't talking to each other for years.

Their harmonies influenced pretty much everyone in the "second generation" of rock & roll, including a very profound influence on John & Paul.
Nancy & I saw them a few years ago when they toured with Simon & Garfunkel. When they sang "Let It Be Me", I had tears in my eyes and a lump in my throat the size of a grapefruit. Those 70 year-old dudes still sounded like the teenagers they were when they first came to prominence. Initially, we had debated paying the $180 per ticket for the show, but as I asked my wife (with the tears running down her face) "glad we spent the money?", she answered "worth every penny".
I have never regretted the expenditure..even more so now.
