#1. "Three Squirrel Night"

Debuted: 1/30/13

Image

Every year, I will have an avatar from January or February that I will consider to be an early favorite for the top spot in the countdown, only to come to the end of the year and realize I'd place it in the also-rans. This avatar fit the bill this year... but a funny thing happened along the way. No other avatar I drew this year managed to knock it off the perch I put it on. 11 months later, "Three Squirrel Night" is still my favorite avatar of the year...

The conception of this year's top avatar started as one of earendel's typical top o the morning threads where he noted a predicted wild weather swing. Kusch, from the icebox of America we like to call North Dakota, chimed in with the predicted temperatures for his neck of the woods... but he noted that -24 wasn't really all that bad! I said that must still be a three squirrel night... a reference to the more famous term three dog night.

So we have kusch, who had never appeared in an avatar before and hasn't since, braving out the frigid -24 degree night while being warmed up by my three most famous squirrel girls... MBRS taking care of the head and neck, and Angel and Sandy flanking the sides and legs. This avatar was too damn cute and adorable not to win, while also showing off the kindness and selflessness of squirrels. The next time it gets so cold in Colorado, we hope Sprotsie Baby will see the light....

And thus concludes this year's ES Avatar Countdown! I hope you enjoyed the retrospective, regardless of whether your favorites were ranked where you wanted or not, and I look forward to doing this again next year!

Thank you. It was fun to read about the details of each avatar and of course any MBA references are always enjoyable.

That is a fabulous and Most Excellent avatar. If only there could be a Rainbow Donkey in it.

I don't know if Rainbow Donkeys are warm and snuggly on cold North Dakota nights...

Congratulations to kusch for not only appearing in an ES avatar but winning the title of #1 with it!

Thank you everyone for indulging my list. I will try to keep the number of possums harmed during the course of these avatars to a minimum this year...... well, nevermind.

I guess I can't argue that.
