RIP Peter O'Toole

A reformed—but unrepentant—hell-raiser, O'Toole long suffered from ill health. Kenis announced the death in an email Sunday.

He was awesome. I'm glad he accepted the honorary Oscar.

TCM may have to change their tribute video.

It's amazing that neither he nor Richard Burton ever won an Oscar.

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

The same friend who loved Olivia de Havilland (Joan Fontaine thread) also turned me on to "My Favorite Year." What a great movie!

Peter O'Toole used to appear on Letterman quite a bit and would always regale Dave with stories from the old days.
