CSLS 11/27:Estonut 2 Edition
Today's game comes to us from Esto again. Esto will get the high score. Take it away Esto
GAME:
Today's game is a little bit different. I am giving you one song. Listen to the video carefully. In most cases, the intro music or first verse will suffice. Your job is to name the song and artist that correspond to it in some way. Hopefully, this will be more obvious than it sounds like here.
1 point for the corresponding song, 1 point for the corresponding artist and a 5-point bonus at the end. If you don't get the bonus, I will also accept a (valid) Krox for a 5-point bonus.
1.
My Sweet Lord - George Harrison (1970)
2.
Brain Stew - Green Day (1996)
3.
Fight Test - Flaming Lips (2003)
4.
Dolly Parton "We Used To" (1975)
5.
Iris - Goo Goo Dolls (1998)
6.
Hope - R.E.M. (1998)
7.
Some Nights - Fun. (2012)
8.
Waterloo - ABBA (1974)
9.
Love Without Tragedy - Rihanna (2012)
10.
Werewolves of London - Warren Zevon (1978)
Bonus:
If you got a match above, you most likely got the theme. Therefore, this is a 5-point bonus question. The relationship is more subtle than the others. In this case, I'm giving you the older song, as it is fairly obscure.
We Used to Know - Jethro Tull's (1969)

Re: CSLS 11/27:Estonut 2 Edition
Interesting game, Esto! But...
I am really horrible at picking out musical similarities in songs. I have such a tin ear, a lot of music sounds the same to me. I still have to strain to hear I Want A New Drug in Ghostbusters....
1. He's So Fine - Chiffons (this one is at least famous!)
3. The first song that struck me from the intro was Hanson's Mmm Bop
4. Definitely Stairway to Heaven - Led Zep
5. I always thought this song had a vibe like Collective Soul's The World I Know...
8. I doubt this is correct, but I always hear the much superior Linda Ronstadt version of Heat Wave (originally Martha & the Vandellas) in this song...
10. Without Kid Rock, I'd have never realized this song is so similar to Sweet Home Alabama - Lynyrd Skynyrd
Bonus: I hear somethign similar to Jim Croce's "Time in a Bottle"... I'll die if that's right....

Spoiler
1. He’s So Fine/The Chiffons
2. 25 or Six to Four/Chicago
4. Stairway to Heaven/Led Zeppelin
5. Norwegian Wood/The Beatles
(I know that’s wrong, but it’s the closest I can get.)
6. Suzanne/Leonard Cohen
7. Road to Nowhere/The Talking Heads
8. Call Me/Blondie
(I know that’s wrong because the ABBA song is older, but it’s the closest I can get.)
10. One Man Band/Three Dog Night
Krox:
I don’t know if it’s legit, but whenever I hear the Madonna song start on the radio, I always think for a second it’s the other one.

Spoiler
The mere mention of that first song automatically gave away the theme for me, so I knew exactly what I was listening for: Songs that sampled or otherwise ripped off melodies/lyrics from other songs.
1. "He's So Fine", the Chiffons
2. "25 or 6 to 4", Chicago
3. "Father and Son", Yusuf Islam/Cat Stevens
4. "Stairway to Heaven", Led Zeppelin
5. "Piano Man", Billy Joel
6. "Suzanne", Leonard Cohen
7. "Cecilia", Simon & Garfunkel
8. pass
9. "Message in a Bottle", the Police, although it sounds to me as though Rihanna ripped off at least two other Sting songs here--"King of Pain" and "Fortress Around Your Heart" (This isn't Rihanna's only act of musical theft. She also ripped off Manu Dibango's "Soul Makossa" for her song "Don't Stop the Music, although Michael Jackson ripped off that song first for "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'".)
10. "Sweet Home Alabama", Lynyrd Skynyrd (Incidentally, both of the songs at #10 got sampled in Kid Rock's "All Summer Long".)
Krox: I've already mentioned two, but I'll go ahead and add a third. This one is perhaps the most infamous and most blatant act of musical theft--Ray Parker Jr.'s "Ghostbusters" ripped off Huey Lewis & the News' "I Want a New Drug".
Bonus: "Hotel California", the Eagles

I know I didn't get the one you were thinking of for the bonus, but the chord progression is the same in the intro. It is not much less obscure than the Tull song, however...

1. My Sweet Lord - George Harrison (1970)
Let's see, going for any number of hymns would be too obvious, so let's go with the definition of lord as a king and play off George's name reminding me of King George (all six of them). What song is there about another not-quite English king?
Henry the Eighth - Herman's Hermits

Brain Stew - Green Day (1996)

Eat It - Weird Al Yanokovich

Thanks, gentlemens! As I told ShamelessWeasel, I procrastinated so long on my first game (snippets) that I just threw it together when I saw his reminder. Once I saw the time and thought that others had put into their games, I felt badly enough that I asked him if I could have another crack at it.
My inspiration for this game was not so much rip-offs as it was songs with similar structures. Some of the most enjoyable performances I've seen were when the performer plays a song of their own and then segues into something different altogether. I've seen Neil Finn/Crowded House do that. Barenaked Ladies usually do it several times a show. Another one I really loved was the extended version of "Polaroids" that Shawn Colvin used to do. I looked up an article to get the songs listed correctly:
Hopefully, everyone will listen to the answer videos, as that will (hopefully) reinforce the similarity between the two songs. I'm not sure how SW will/should score alternate answers provided by players, as some of them may also be similar in other ways to the first song I provided.
I wish I had been clearer in the instructions. I think I misled Marley by being too vague. I think he would have gotten some of these.

Since I couldn't find YouTube videos for any of this stuff, I went instead with sound-alike (or even ripped-off) songs. Perhaps the best example of what I had hoped to do is the bonus song. I thought that that one was pretty difficult, so I looked for more obvious sound-alikes to make the game more fun for more people. The author of the article linked above wrote:You can tell she's sharp from her selection of material, choosing Talking Heads as well as Tom Littlefield. But the tour de force came in the encore, when she shifted "Polaroids" into 10 other songs, including the Temptations' "Just My Imagination (Running Away with Me)," Jackie DeShannon's "Put a Little Love in Your Heart," more Temptations: "My Girl," The Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Give It Away," Sly and the Family Stone's "Everyday People," the Rolling Stones' "Beast of Burden," Paul McCartney's "Ebony and Ivory," Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone," the Beatles' "Baby You're a Rich Man."
"Almost everything fits into this groove," she said. "Except 'Freebird.' "
A child of five would understand this. Send someone to fetch a child of five.
