“Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” sees 20 percent increase in key demo year-over-year, “Family Feud” up 15 percent

Game on, D.L. Hughley.

Of the five syndicated fall TV game shows, the only two up in the key demo year-over-year are hosted by members of the “Original Kings of Comedy.”

With Bernie Mac’s 2008 death, the comedy quartet became a trio. The only surviving member not jump-starting game show ratings right now is Hughley. But he will have his chance to match his friends’ success when “Trust Me, I’m a Game Show Host” premieres next week. Comedian Michael Ian Black will co-host the show.

“Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?,” hosted by Cedric “The Entertainer,” is up 20 percent in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic from the same time period last year, when it was hosted by Meredith Vieira. However, that large jump is skewed somewhat when considering the small ratings in question — a 0.6 vs. 2012′s 0.5.

“Family Feud,” hosted by friend and stand-up comedy tour collaborator Steve Harvey, is up 15 percent year-over-year — a 1.3 rating to a 1.5.

The other three syndicated game shows — “Cash Cab,” “Jeopardy” and “Wheel of Fortune” — are all flat from 2012′s fall-to-date measurement.

While “Millionaire” has grown under its new host, it still ranks fourth out of the five shows in ratings and viewers. “Trust Me, I’m a Game Show Host” debuts Oct. 22.

Specifically, the first week's ratings were up one-tenth in the 18-49 demographic. Millionaire's overall rating for its most recently-reported week was a 2.0, which I believe is the lowest rating the show has ever seen. (Over the last couple of years, it has usually hovered between a 2.2 and 2.5.)

There's another syndicated game show this article doesn't mention: Let's Ask America, which is a game show where the contestants play from home via Skype. It's only seen on a handful of stations but ratings were decent enough for it to get renewed for a second season. Syndicated Cash Cab consists of reruns of the cable show from 2007-08.

I just saw a preview of Trust Me, I’m a Game Show Host on Good Morning America, and I liked it. Hosts D.L. Hughley and Michael Ian Black each read a fact, and the contestant must figure out which fact is true. In the clip shown, D.L.'s fact was about Pres. John Tyler's grandsons, which BBs know is true. Surprisingly, Josh Elliott complimented D.L. on his white suit, which is a no-no on some game shows. The premiere is Tuesday on TBS.

Who Wants to Be a Millionaire has acquired more of a party atmosphere since the Original Kings of Comedy tour veteran took over hosting duties from Meredith Vieira. Ratings have held up, which suggests that Vieira fans who stopped watching have been replaced by Cedric followers. In recent weeks, the Disney/ABC syndicated game show has matched its season high of 3 million total viewers. Says a Disney insider, "It's definitely heading in the right direction."

Last season's season high household rating was a 2.6. The show has yet to go past a 2.2 this season.
