Angels/Cardinals Trade

#1 Post by Estonut » Fri Nov 22, 2013 4:08 pm

I know the Angels need pitching and a third baseman. We got both today from the Cards.

What do the Cardinals fans think of this trade?

The Angels today acquired INF David Freese and RHP Fernando Salas from the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for OF Peter Bourjos and OF Randal Grichuk. Today's announcement was made by General Manager Jerry Dipoto.

Freese, 30, posted a .262 (121/462) average with nine home runs and 60 RBI in 138 games for the Cardinals in 2013. Since the start of the 2010 season, Freese's .285 clip ranked fifth by an N.L. third baseman while his .356 OBP ranked fourth.

Salas, 28, appeared in 27 games out of the bullpen for the Cardinals and finished 2013 with an 0-3 record and 4.50 ERA (28 IP - 14 ERA). He registered at least one strikeout in 18 of his 27 appearances and had eight outings with at least four outs recorded.

You did not give the stats for the players going to the Cardinals. I'm still a fan, but I don't follow baseball as closely as I used to and I don't know anything about those players. Freese was a hero for the Cardinals in the 2011 postseason, and I hope he works out better for the Angels than that Pujols guy.

Also, the Rangers just got Prince Fielder from Detroit for Ian Kinsler, which I think is a good deal for the home team.

Freese has bad pins. Salas had one good year for us, then became almost completely untrustworthy in any kind of pressure situation. Both are competent big-leaguers, but Cards fans are not crying about this, at least not here, outside of the STL metro area. Don't know anything about the prospect, but Bourjos makes Jon Jay irrelevant, which means he could be part of a package to try to pick up a shortstop.

In short, this Cards fan thinks it could be a good deal for both clubs, since the Angels were so weak at 3B and need bullpen help a lot more than the Cards did.

Freese will make you miss Alberto Callaspo.... unless the Angels start making the postseason every year, in which case, you will get one good month out of him...

Yeah, sorry about that. I posted the blurb from an e-mail from the Angels. Obviously, they don't say much about the out-going guys. I only know that Bourjos is really fast, but tends to get injured more frequently than most. I don't know a thing about Grichuk.

Thanks for all about info about the incoming guys. That's what I really wanted to know. I just didn't ask clearly...
