Chris Ngoon (friend of Uly)
Santa Clarita, CA
Lab Tech

The King of Trivia was walking around NYC last night with the $100K he has won.

Question 12 - $250K
Lost for almost 40 years, the only copy of what TV show's pilot was reportedly found under the bed of Pepito Perez, a clown who appeared in the episode?
A. The Twilight Zone B. Leave It to Beaver
C. I Love Lucy D. The Dick Van Dyke Show
Spoiler
Chris discounted The Twilight Zone as its first episode was one person all by himself... Leave it to Beaver, why would a clown be there. I Love Lucy was kind of a sitcom and the name kind of matches
Dick Van Dyke was a writer in NY.
Chris added that had an inkling possibly before the choices came up. He went over the numbers $25K vs $100K vs $250K
It was a pilot so it may not even have been broadcasted at all.
Chris said he can safely eliminate Twilight Zone unless it was an unbroadcasted pilot.
Cedric responded to confirm that Chris was thinking of one of these before the answers came up.
Chris "Right... the option is there... it was I Love Lucy"
Chris started to repeat "Why would a clown be there" and a $225K swing on that question.
Cedric said he often asks that thing (Why would a clown be there) to himself
Chris asked himself if he would go with his gut or play it safe...
I will say ... C, I Love Lucy... (long pause)... final answer
Answer
Cedric: You were kind of thinking of it off the top, it was up there, I don't know how you feel.
But you're the guy with $250,000!

C. I Love Lucy
Bank: $250K
Commercial break

Cedric returns to point out that Chris is 22 years old and has just won $250K. Chris plays trivia all around the world, but this has to be a great experience for him
Chris: "Cloud nine"
Cedric introduced Chris's dad, his sister, and his friend Steve.
Chris's sister said she hasn't felt this kind of panic before. "I can't process this right now."

Question 13 - $500K
Although Samuel Morse famously telegraphed "What hath God wrought," the first public demonstration of the telegraph was actually what line?
A. A patient waiter is no loser B. Time stays, we go
C. An old horse knows the road D. Fortune favors the brave
Spoiler
Chris said it's so ironic that choice D "Fortune favors the brave" is up there
Cedric asked why and Chris said he did not know that $100K question and guessed it, then he had an inkling on I Love Lucy but did not know
Chris said it is fixating on choice D right now.
Choice B "Time stays, we go" he says could make sense because if you have the telegraph, it would have allowed for the expansion in the US with railway tracks.
Choice C maybe because now messages could be delivered by the telegraph instead
Choice A if someone is getting a message by horseback he would have to be a patient waiter so it sounds like it is more advocating the horse delivery system
"Oh, dear"
Chris says if he can safely eliminate A and C, he figures the mathematical odds 1/2 times $250K vs 1/2 minus $75K if he gets it wrong, then corrected himself to $225 when Cedric said something and "that don't sound right"
Chris read the choices to himself again "They all sound so good but"
"Does fortune really favor the brave?"
Cedric? ... I think I will have to say... D, fortune favors the brave.... D, fortune favors the brave.... Final answer
Answer
Cedric: Chris, gutsy player. The correct answer was A. A patient water is no loser. Chris, what an amazing player.
Cedric points out that Chris does not leave with nothing, he won $25,000.

Uh, that's "waiter", not "water".

I'm in England and have not seen this episode. Answer A was "waiter," not "water," right?

I have known Chris for several years. He's definitely a good guy and I'm glad he played to win and showed what he could do on a tough stack. Enjoy your winnings, Chris!

BTW, you'll be seeing Steve again. Chris and I were just I NYC watching him tape. Steve and I met for the first time 8 years ago, when taping Jeopardy. Steve's show aired just a couple of days before my first show.

No spoilers here. But judging solely on his reparte with Cedric, and how much we in the audience enjoyed watching him play, I wouldn't be surprised if they moved his appearance up to a sweeps month airing.

Kaltenbaugh. He was with Chris' father and sister in the companion chair.

Q12: Here is where I would leave. Very happy with my $100,000.00. I was thinking about this going by "lost pilot" search in my brain, trying to disregard the clown. Didn't think TZ pilot was lost. Or DVD. But couldn't decide re the other 2. At this level, if you don't have a gut feeling you probably should leave.

Chris did, ultimately, go with his gut, & was right. But he did some spectacular overthinking in saying "maybe it was an unaired pilot". But he got over it, bless him.

Q13: I'm gone, but if there liked "fortune favors brave". But that's because I like it as a saying, think it's the same kind of thing people liking "G-d wrought" would like. Actually have no clue, & would leave here too.

Chris is obviously enough of a gambler, thought he had it down to 2, & went for it. I'm sorry he didn't win. I congratulate him on his game.

No, he really wasn't.

Like Chris I could eliminate TZ but none of the others, so I might as well use my ATA and then walk away when the audience doesn't produce a good result.

Wow, what a great run and what guts in going for the answer on the $250K question. I wouldn't have had any inkling, nor why that would have been the line.
