You mentioned an upcoming trip to Africa.

Have you read, or otherwise heard of, Alexandra Fuller.

She wrote

"Don't Let's Go To The Dogs Tonight"

and

"Scribbling the Cat"

I really think you would like these books-

the first is a memoir of her childhood as growing up White African in the Rhodesian War

and the second-she travels into Mozambique with a soldier of that war to see the areas he fought.

Her parents and the soldier now live in Zambia and farm there.

Thanks. Not familiar with them but will check them out. No doubt need some more "in-flight" reading for the 24 hour trip it takes just to get there.

Hey Spock! Was looking into the books you recommended. Have you read anything by Peter Godwin as well? He wrote "Mukiwa: A White Boy in Africa"and "When a Crocodile Eats the Sun: A Memoir of Africa". Godwin also co-wrote one of the more definitive histories of the time of civil war in Rhodesia called "Rhodesians Never Die". He is more focused on Zimbabwe/Rhodesia, as are many books, rather than Zambia/Northern Rhodesia which tends to have less written about it.
