ANSWERS/POINTS LS WACKY WEDNESDAY March 12
I think there's a Merry Man out there somewhere crying that I didn't ask him to guest host today. I'm expecting some high scores on today's game. But, I've been wrong before.
Let's hope that everybody has gotten hooked on my groovy openings, because there's something different today. Rather than the artist who did the songs (pretty obvious), instead name the artist who did the original song. I've also heard rumours to the effect that you need both the song and the artist on the bonus section!
Clarification: Name the song BELOW, but the ARTIST whose material inspired them.

1. I hear those ice cream bells and I start to drool
Keep a couple quarts in my locker at school
Yah, but chocolate's gettin' old
Vanilla just leaves me cold
2. "Jerry! Jerry!" Now the crowd starts their favorite chant
Should I turn off my TV? I just can't
I have a tendency to watch it religiously
I have a history of taping each one
3. And the Jedi I admire most
Met up with Darth Maul and now he's toast
Well, I'm still here and he's a ghost
I guess I'll train this boy
4. Goin' to the market now, market now
I'm the city's biggest bologna buyer
Walkin' down the shopping aisles, shopping aisles
Filling up my basket with Oscar Mayer
5. I'm sick of Fred and Ethel always comin' over here
Cause Fred eats all our pretzel sticks and then he spills his beer
Why don't you serve your casserole and make them disappear Lucy
6. Ridin' in a bus down the boulevard
And the place was pretty packed
Couldn't find a seat so I had to stand
With the perverts in the back
It was smellin' like a locker room
There was junk all over the floor
We're already packed in like sardines
But we're stoppin' to pick up more
7. I'm a man of the land, I'm into discipline
Got a Bible in my hand and a beard on my chin
But if I finish all of my chores and you finish thine
Then tonight we're gonna party like it's 1699
8. What's the matter with the tune he's writin'
Well, you know it's gonna be a smash
It's so nice when you're a big name artist
Doesn't matter if it sounds like trash
9. People used to scoff, now they say "Mazel tov!"
He's such a macher 'cause he worked his tuchas off
Yeah, he keeps his cool and teaches shul
What's not to like? What's not to like?
10. Barney Rubble, laughin' like a hyena
Barney Rubble, what a little wiener
Where's Wilma? Anybody seen her?
Got a baby elephant vacuum cleaner
Bonus Instrumental: This gentleman was a successful songwriter before gathering a band of his own and becoming the king of the instrumental throughout the 60’s and 70’s. This 1965 song is my favourite and one of their biggest hits. It’s found on an album of the same name that portrays a young lady on the cover wearing nothing but a rose and a big pile of dessert topping.
Bonus Bonus: Name the record label founded by the above artist, along with with Jerry Moss in 1961.
Super Bonus: The man in question also co-wrote, with Lou Adler, a number of songs for this star of the late-50’s/early-60’s who was shot and killed under somewhat mysterious circumstances in 1964 at the age of 33.

I Love Rocky Road - Joan Jett (OK, now that I know what this one's all about, I'd say there's a very, very good chance I didn't play this game originally, because I used this exact same format (Title and original song artist), with my WAY MM hosting, in my all-Merry Man March 2003 LS and thought I was being original....)

I admire the work of Weird Al and it's really a shame that I can't remember more of these titles.
1. I hear those ice cream bells and I start to drool
Keep a couple quarts in my locker at school
Yah, but chocolate's gettin' old
Vanilla just leaves me cold
Eat It - Michael Jackson
3. And the Jedi I admire most
Met up with Darth Maul and now he's toast
Well, I'm still here and he's a ghost
I guess I'll train this boy
That Anakin Guy
And why are you torturing me to name the artist who recorded American Pie. You know I can't do that!
7. I'm a man of the land, I'm into discipline
Got a Bible in my hand and a beard on my chin
But if I finish all of my chores and you finish thine
Then tonight we're gonna party like it's 1699
Some parody about the Amish...

Ok. I come to this in a weird way. I only know the album in question because I used to have this EP: http://tinyurl.com/25hhug. So I know it's by Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass. I don't know what songs are on it. The only 2 HATB songs I can name are A Taste of Honey and Rise, and I think Rise is on an album called Rise. So I'll go with A Taste of Honey.

10. Another one I know, but don't know the name of. Based on "Give it Away" by RCHP, IIRC.

Guessing these are Weird Al songs
3. Inspired by American Pie/Don MacClane
4. Inspired by Physical/Rod Stewart
7. Inspired by Party Like its 1999 (1699)/inspired by Prince
8. Inspired by Paperback Writer/The Beatles
9. Inspired by Ghostbusters/whomever
Bonus Instrumental: Herb Alpert, but probably not Tijuana Taxi
Bonus Bonus: At least I got Alpert right! A&M records
Super Bonus: Sam Cooke wrote a lot of his own stuff; did Alpert & co write some too? If you mean Cooke, though, his death isn't much of a mystery; its pretty much agreed that the hotel clerk who shot him "in self defense" was in cahoots with the prostitute who had just robbed him. Cooke should have admitted he'd been taken & just left; he'd be alive today.

First to remind of the fact which seems peculiar now, that in the days before multi-track recording, especially in California, the record companies tended to send their acts to record their front men with the usual supergroup sessionmen. Who could be counted on to keep the beat, stay in tune, not fluff the riffs and thereby maximize the value of the studio time dollar.
Herb Alpert plus these guys = Tijuana Brass.
I am sure this is oversimpified, but I seem to remember Mr. Hal Blaine going bomp-bomp-bomp-bomp-bomp-bomp-bomp, inspiringly, on A Taste of Honey, which along with the artist name HATB, is the answer to the first bonus
"A Taste of Honey" refers to an edible, and therefore fits with the theme of "Whipped Cream.... and Other Delights", the album by HATB which featured the young lady wearing shaving cream as a more photographable stand-in for dessert topping.
Interestingly, "A Taste of Honey" was released as the B-side of a single on A and M records (second bonus), but caught the ear of kids and radio types and wound up as one of the major Grammy winners of 1965. It propelled HATB from being one of those acts which appealed to Older People, who bought Albums in Department Stores with the record section right near the Furniture Department, to being an act with sixties-cool persona which lasted three full years, a consierable accomplishment. (Remembering that a year in the sixties was like a decade, in terms of pop kulch......)
i THINK but not sure the A-side was "Tijuana Taxi".
"A Taste of Honey" as a song was also performed by The Beatles, being one of their more obscure covers. The tune, IIRC, started out as entr'acte music for the play, "A Taste of Honey", later to become an important but rather depressing British movie. The tune does not appear in the movie.
Third bonus is Sam Cooke.
Bonus Bonus: Name the record label founded by the above artist, along with with Jerry Moss in 1961.

Re: Lyrically Speaking WACKY WEDNESDAY March 12
I think there's a Merry Man out there somewhere crying that I didn't ask him to guest host today. I'm expecting some high scores on today's game. But, I've been wrong before.
Let's hope that everybody has gotten hooked on my groovy openings, because there's something different today. Rather than the artist who did the songs (pretty obvious), instead name the artist who did the original song. I've also heard rumours to the effect that you need both the song and the artist on the bonus section!
Clarification: Name the song BELOW, but the ARTIST whose material inspired them.

Keep a couple quarts in my locker at school
Yah, but chocolate's gettin' old
Vanilla just leaves me cold
I LOVE ROCKY ROAD - JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS
Just Joan Jett got full credit
2. "Jerry! Jerry!" Now the crowd starts their favorite chant
Should I turn off my TV? I just can't
I have a tendency to watch it religiously
I have a history of taping each one
JERRY SPRINGER - BARENAKED LADIES
3. And the Jedi I admire most
Met up with Darth Maul and now he's toast
Well, I'm still here and he's a ghost

THE SAGA BEGINS - DON MCLEAN

I'm the city's biggest bologna buyer
Walkin' down the shopping aisles, shopping aisles
Filling up my basket with Oscar Mayer
MY BOLOGNA - THE KNACK
5. I'm sick of Fred and Ethel always comin' over here
Cause Fred eats all our pretzel sticks and then he spills his beer
Why don't you serve your casserole and make them disappear Lucy
RICKY - TONI BASIL
I gave Hey, Ricky and Oh, Ricky full credit, because I couldn't figure out why I thought Hey should get full and Oh should get half, so everybody wins! Sadly, I couldn't stretch it to Oh, Lucy, which cost mrkelley the perfect bonus. Keep shooting for those stars, dude!

AMISH PARADISE - COOLIO
Did I mention that Coolio was the halftime show at the Nuggets/Cavs game earlier this year? And used so many smoke bombs that there was still a haze halfway through the third quarter? Oh, I did? What are the odds? Ha!
8. What's the matter with the tune he's writin'
Well, you know it's gonna be a smash
It's so nice when you're a big name artist

PRETTY FLY FOR A RABBI - (THE) OFFSPRING
10. Barney Rubble, laughin' like a hyena
Barney Rubble, what a little wiener
Where's Wilma? Anybody seen her?
Got a baby elephant vacuum cleaner
BEDROCK ANTHEM - RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS
Anything with Bedrock got half credit. Luckily I wasn't requiring original song as I don't think anybody who added it got both Under the Bridge and Give It Away.

HERB ALPERT with or without the TIJUANA BRASS - WHIPPED CREAM
Not sure what was with all the Taste of Honeys, as the clue said the SAME name.
Bonus Bonus: Name the record label founded by the above artist, along with with Jerry Moss in 1961.
A&M RECORDS
Unfortunately, I couldn't give this to etaoin because in the midst of his treatise, he failed to ever mention A&M (and I read it three times just to make sure!)
Super Bonus: The man in question also co-wrote, with Lou Adler, a number of songs for this star of the late-50’s/early-60’s who was shot and killed under somewhat mysterious circumstances in 1964 at the age of 33.

ORIGINAL POINTS for 2002
Points were a lot higher this time around! Mike dropped quite a bit, but that was mainly because he didn't read closely and gave the original song rather than the Weird Al one. But not by a whole half, so it was sort of an improvement.
