Transcript 3/15/2013 - Mike Solano (carryover contestant)

#1 Post by BBTranscriptTeam » Sun Mar 17, 2013 4:57 pm

Mike Solano
East Norwich, NY
sports broadcaster

Mike is only one question away from Classic Millionaire and has one jump the question lifeline remaining. Although he doesn't live very far away Mike almost missed the taping because of traffic on the Long Island Expressway. Meredith says that it has taken Mike a long time to get here - he's been watching game shows for 25 years and never thought that a "regular guy" could get on the show. His whole family loves trivia. Mike says it's absolutely unbelievable. He has $58,600 in his bank.

Question #10 (Built for Bunnies)
Styleture.com calls the Playboy Mansion an example of what architectural style?
A - Colonial Revival
B - Victorian
C - Gothic-Tudor
D - Beaux-Arts

Mike doesn't know if he should admit on TV that he's seen the mansion. He has images of Hef in his smoking jacket inside the house. Mike has had time to think about this and is not anywhere close to 100% sure so he decides to use his last lifeline.
Spoiler
Answer: C (Gothic-Tudor)
Value: $3,000
Bank: $58,600 (unchanged)
CLASSIC MILLIONAIRE

$100K - According to the most recent IRS statistics, the wealthiest one percent of U.S. taxpayers have an adjusted gross income of at least what?
A - $199,621
B - $217,836
C - $343,927
D - $526,228

"It's been a lot fun," Mike says. He's not in the 1% and $58,600 is more than he's made in a year. He's starting school this fall to study Speech language pathology classes. He wants to help other people find their voices. The money will help him jump start his career.
Spoiler
C ($343,927)

No idea. JTQ.

Again, no idea. JTQ 2

This question is very ambiguous. Do they mean individual taxpayers or married people filing a joint return? The $343K figure is mostly based on joint returns, so the entry level one-percenters each make about half that much, on average. The $343,927 number comes from 2009.

Unlike Mike, I would have had all my lifelines and would have used one here, probably a JTQ. I don't think I've ever seen the exterior of the mansion (or the interior, for that matter).

After all the political hubbub about "taxing the 1%" I knew the figure was either B or C but wouldn't have been willing to pull the trigger. Time for the second JTQ.
