Idol Chatter 2/20/08

#1 Post by T_Bone0806 » Wed Feb 20, 2008 9:52 pm

Spoiler
Well, the gals outdid the guys overall, although none of the guys were anywhere as bad as the worst of the ladies tonight.

1-Ramiele "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me" Ladies and gents, your dark horse candidate for season 7. This one could surprise everyone before all is said and done. Nice understated take on this song, while choosing just the right spots to bust it out. A

2-Alexandrea "Spinning Wheel" Tremendous control of her voice for someone so young, especially on the demanding middle section. Good stage presence. A-

3-Carly "The Shadow of Your Smile" Was she wearing long sleeves because she had the flu, or to cover the tats so as not to lose any more votes than the "past recording contract" controversy has already cost her?
Anyway, this was a solid if somewhat dull performance. The song choice didn't help the excitement level, but the technique was hard to quibble with. B+

4-Asia'H "Piece of My Heart" She has a really good voice and a lively stage presence. I don't think she has enough power in her voice to completely match the rigors of this song, though. She couldn't quite belt it out of the park. She gave it a ride to the warning track, however. She did have fun with it and there were no sour notes. B

5-Amanda "Baby Please Don't Go" First things first. Simon never heard of this song? He's gotta get away from the boy bands and put on some rock-n-roll. Hello? Van Morrison and Them? Every 60's blues rock band that ever walked into a recording studio?
As for the rockin' nurse, all I can say is GENUINE. The real deal. There have been a number of Idol contestants past and present that have been called "rockers" but few really fit the bill. Amanda fits. She was a bit off kilter on the "scat" singing part but wailed on the tune otherwise. I don't know how far she'll go 'cuz I can't hear her doing anything but rock, which will hurt her with those who don't like that style, but I'll enjoy her ride while it lasts. Don't tell my wife, but I'm in love. B

6-Syesha "Tobacco Road" I liked that she chose a rock song but I think she oversang it. She has a great voice, no doubt. but the vocal acrobatics were overbaked and sometimes pushed her off key and away from selling the lyrics. B

7-Brooke "Happy Together" A simple song that's not so simple to sing. Believe me, I know. She teetered on the verge of disaster on the verses but never fell off the cliff, and overall she did a decent job. She sure does light up the stage with her smile, and brought a nice energy to the song. Bottom line is I smiled myself watching her, so how bad could she have been? B-

8-Alaina "More Today Than Yesterday" Hey, how come Carrie Underwood is back on the show? No fair, she already won one season! Oh, right, this is Carrie-clone Alaina. And she has that same throaty yowl you hear in pretty much all of the teen pop-country princesses (LeAnn Rimes, Ms. Underwood, etc.) through the years. That yowl drives me insane.
This was not the worst performance of the night by far, but I hated it anyway. It was certainly not the slam dunk that the judges heard. Just like in the Underwood season, they lavish praise on the lil' darlin', while I sit watching and yelling at the screen in disbelief "what about all those sour notes? Didn't you HEAR them?" In the interest of full disclosure, I am trying to grade objectively, but I am actively rooting against this one..one Carrie in the biz is enough. B-

9-Kady "Groovy Kind Of love" Showed some good power in her voice and had some decent moments, but she ALSO sings from her throat too often, and her vocal runs were ill timed and not very impressive. She looked pissed when the criticism was flowing, shifting back and forth on her feet, pouting and looking like she was one more comment away from throwing a hissy fit. She was STILL looking that way at the end of the show. C+

10-Kristy Lee "Rescue Me" Adding further fuel to the opinion that all she can really sing well is "Amazing Grace". This was just blahhhhhhhhhhh C+

11-Joanne "I Say a Little Prayer" I like her and want her to do well, but this was not good. Nerves were very evident, as she had no breath control, causing her to pause in the middle of a line several times, and veer offkey even more. D+

12- Amy "Where the Boys Are" After the first line, my cat hissed at the screen. By the next line, I was hissing too. By the end of the song, my tv was threatening to shut itself off. William Hung hit more notes correctly a few years ago than Amy did tonight. This was cruel and unusual punishment. F

Amy's definitely gone and probably Joanne, as both Kady and Kristy Lee seem to have followings at least by what I'm seeing on the Internets..

I loved a few of these: Ramiel, Alexandrea, Asia'h, Amanda, Syesha

Carly is the Hillary Clinton of the group - polarizing. I want to like her, and I do appreciate some things about her voice. But I can't warm up to her. Her high end is not as pure as I assumed it would be, and her low end was also not great. I guess the bronchitis makes it a miracle some of them sang at all.

I liked Joanne a lot earlier, and hope she recovers another round.

I would have voted for Syesha, as I do not have any attachment to an earlier version of "Tobacco Road" to compare hers with. I've heard it, but not a lot, so I liked hers, and thought she showed potential for other kinds of songs. I may even check out that iTunes deal, to see how long her song is, if it's worth a buck.

Only the boys' songs are available right now. Maybe in the daytime.

You can get a free 7-minute video clip of the guy in the cloak singing "You Are My Brother".

Well, I missed most of this. Awww. Over to YouTube.
Viewed from that perspective, Amanda was magic. Just like the old days. One minute and 39 seconds of something out of nowhere that kicks butt. No comment on some of the others.

I do like using your comments to spark mine. Thank you for doing such a great job.

Well, the gals outdid the guys overall, although none of the guys were anywhere as bad as the worst of the ladies tonight.

I was left blaher (did I make that word up?) after the girls than I was after the boys. Maybe I just like looking at boys better.

1-Ramiele "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me" Ladies and gents, your dark horse candidate for season 7. This one could surprise everyone before all is said and done. Nice understated take on this song, while choosing just the right spots to bust it out. A

She blew me away. I was getting tired and starting to wonder if I was going to make it until 10:00 - I woke up!

I also like her spirit.

2-Alexandrea "Spinning Wheel" Tremendous control of her voice for someone so young, especially on the demanding middle section. Good stage presence. A-

She has pipes and she has spunk - gotta love that.

I said the same thing about her tattoos. Especially after they showed her husband (during her first audition) and he said he didn't want to be filmed with his head and face tattoeed for fear she would get bad press - or whatever)

She was ill - it showed. I hope she stays.

This is when I thought I was going to go to sleep - sorry.

5-Amanda "Baby Please Don't Go" First things first. Simon never heard of this song? He's gotta get away from the boy bands and put on some rock-n-roll. Hello? Van Morrison and Them? Every 60's blues rock band that ever walked into a recording studio?

Don't tell my wife, but I'm in love. B

23 years old! You gotta be kidding me - if she was on 10 Years Younger and in the box - I would say she was 40. Holy Crap! Talk about rough living!

Rock is not my thing - she still sounded like Joplin to me and she always will. I trust that if you like that sound, she is great.

What........... ever.

6-Syesha "Tobacco Road" I liked that she chose a rock song but I think she oversang it. She has a great voice, no doubt. but the vocal acrobatics were overbaked and sometimes pushed her off key and away from selling the lyrics. B

Like her, liked it - think she is going to be around for months.

She is a cutie - dark side, my ass.

8-Alaina "More Today Than Yesterday" Hey, how come Carrie Underwood is back on the show? No fair, she already won one season! Oh, right, this is Carrie-clone Alaina. In the interest of full disclosure, I am trying to grade objectively, but I am actively rooting against this one..one Carrie in the biz is enough. B-

I like Carrie - I had the same thought - I am happy with one Carrie - and she is not as good as Carrie. Next!

Poor kid - she was no where to be found and the porch light got turned off.

10-Kristy Lee "Rescue Me" Adding further fuel to the opinion that all she can really sing well is "Amazing Grace". This was just blahhhhhhhhhhh C+

I agree, nuff said

11-Joanne "I Say a Little Prayer" I like her and want her to do well, but this was not good. Nerves were very evident, as she had no breath control, causing her to pause in the middle of a line several times, and veer offkey even more. D+

I hate thinking that plus size people can't breath so good - maybe it was nerves, maybe it was poor cardio-vascular fitness - whatever it is - let's have her deal with it - I like her.

I went to the bathroom during her song. The end.

Amy's definitely gone and probably Joanne, as both Kady and Kristy Lee seem to have followings at least by what I'm seeing on the Internets..

I haven't watched the internet to judge following - any of the above can go tonight and I will not notice.

What is with the hair styles this year? Some of the guys were making me say did you look in a mirror? Dreadlocks, and the guy that looks like a girl. yuk! Why did Brooke keep grabbing her hair when she sang? Carly uses too much defrizzing serum, the rocker girl would look so much better without the two tone black/blonde look.

I can't believe out of the thousands and thousands of kids that auditioned that this is the top 24. If they had an album and it wasn't successful, then give someone else a chance.

I either watched American Idol, or The Attack of the Carrie Underwood Clones. Not sure. I actually had trouble telling some of the girls apart!

1-Ramiele "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me"

I had my fingers crossed, because I love this song. She didn't butcher it. Not only that, she did a bang-up job. Good girl!

2-Alexandrea "Spinning Wheel"

She's young and quirky and will go far. Just don't insist people pronounce that torturous first name correctly all the time...

3-Carly "The Shadow of Your Smile"

She looked like Cher with the beginnings of a double chin. It was an old-fashioned performance. But man, the girl can sing, and if she even felt half as bad as I did when I was hacking, I have to give her props for hanging in there. Great voice that wasn't served with the pop crap she mast have sang on her album.

4-Asia'H "Piece of My Heart"

Excellent showmanship, and I know she can sing better than she did. And she sang well. She was my vote-getter last night.

5-Amanda "Baby Please Don't Go"

Not so good, but great, if you know what I mean. Decidedly NOT one of the Carrie Clones. I might get tired of hearing the same thing over and over, but not yet. Her biggest problem is she looks like she's 50 already, and I shudder to think what she'll look like when she IS 50. But she cracks me up when she talks. Nothing rehearsed or pageanty in the least!

6-Syesha "Tobacco Road"

Better than Phil Stacy. Which is damning with faint praise, but I found myself chatting with my son while she was singing. And she still came out on the top half of the women.

7-Brooke "Happy Together"

Someone finally convinced her to wear some foundation so she didn't look like she'd been in the hospital for a month. And the hair didn't look as frizzy. She sang well, but wasn't memorable. Slighly less Carrieish than the other blondes.

8-Alaina "More Today Than Yesterday"

SERIOUS clone here! Will get by on perkiness and youth and the fact that some of the other girls just won't make it very far.

9-Kady "Groovy Kind Of love"

The Pouty Carrie. If she can lay off the Snit Fits, she can actually win. She's just the kind of cute, mediocre pop star that makes a fortune. Really could have a nice voice if she would lay off all the little tricks.

10-Kristy Lee "Rescue Me"

Bland. Seviceable. What was up with the eye movements? Psycho Carrie.

11-Joanne "I Say a Little Prayer"

Where a huge voice comes out of tiny Ramiele, a thin voice comes out of a bigga girl. I hope she stays and shakes the nerves and wows us next week. She's cute and natural.

12- Amy "Where the Boys Are"

I had trouble remembering her, and now I wish I could forget. You don't need a country twang to sing that song as had been suggested, because I distinctly remember Kimberley Locke in the newsboy cap just belting that sucker when it was down to three in Season 2, and Simon was nervous because he wanted Ruben to win. I think Haley, I mean Amy, hit perhaps three correct notes in the whole song. Just an all-around stinker. Toturous, actually.

There were fewer great guys, but also fewer stinkers. It will be harder to shake out a top 6 on the male side.

So, no major surpirses; just a minor one. I thought Colton might have stuck around for another coupla weeks but his voice was nothing special. Definitely not in the top tier, though. My only correct pick was Garrett. When he picked Christy I thought I might have had another one but she escaped this week.

Funny thing about Amy's performance, though. When she finished, Randy mentioned something about Patsy Cline and I'm thinking that that was Connie Francis's song, not Patsy Cline's. Unless, he was just referring to her attempted style. Unless, of course Patsy Cline also recorded that song. But that was a little before my time.

I had picked Amy and Joanne to go (I'm guessing the majority of folks saw that one coming), and had Chikezie and Colton, with the possible substitution of Garret for Colton. I had forgotten about the power of voting blocs, and Chikezie is the only black male. Danny Noriega has locked up the gay teenager vote, being far more Over the Rainbow than the other two (who were more indeterminate. They could possibly be straight. Who knows? At this point, they're out the door.)

I can't see Ramiele finishing any lower than fourth this year. If Jasmine Trias could go so far just being cute, imagine what that voice can do for Ramiele...

It didn't make me sad.

I do wish the big girl could have stayed longer. She proably wasn't going too far anyway.

I am glad Colton is gone. I wish the other Simon had won that one and the other gayish kid had made it. I liked him.

While I don't think Amanda was really in danger of going home, she needs to take a good assessment of what she's doing there. Did you see what she was wearing? I'm sure every female has it in the back of their minds that some people think they had to sleep with a fat bald guy to get a recording contract, but did she think she'd have to wear a quilted sack dress in front of 30 million people?

It's just a short step to From Justin to Kelly II....

Was that her hair or was that extentions?

I saw her parents - they are younger than me!

What is wrong with me? Ok, some of you cannot answer that.

I really liked Amy, I really did. I thought her voice was very easy to listen to. And besides, I also liked her song choice--perfect for her and her voice. You have all confirmed (as if I did not know this already) that I am musically challenged---big time.

Connie Francis..you are 100% correct.

And yet Paula knew Spiral Starecase was the artist behind "More Today Than Yesterday". She topped Randy AND Simon for musical knowledge that night. How about that!

I'm sure every female has it in the back of their minds that some people think they had to sleep with a fat bald guy to get a recording contract, but did she think she'd have to wear a quilted sack dress in front of 30 million people?

It's just a short step to From Justin to Kelly II....
She cracked me up the other night, though, when Ryan was talking to her about her car being wrecked. When asked what she would like to say to the other driver, she responded "Sorry I pulled out in front of ya, dude".

She doesn't seemed fazed by anything. I like her. She could check my breathing anytime.

I will say that she needs to stop adding the word "child" to the end of every other line she sings. That could get irritating quick. It's a singer's crutch I bet she's not even aware she's using.

Definitely not in the top tier, though. My only correct pick was Garrett. When he picked Christy I thought I might have had another one but she escaped this week.

I picked Amy and Joanne to go (although I would've liked to have seen Joanne make it another week based on what I heard in the auditions..also because I liked her personality)). so no surprises there. Mild surprise but no shock on the guys sent home. I thought Garret's boot was given to him a little too abruptly..kinda like "Garret come over here, now get lost". And Simon's comments to Colton were unnecessarily cruel, I thought. That remark could've been made Tuesday night after he sang..those contestants are braced for the knives at that point, but to tell the kid 30 seconds after he's been given the heave-ho to basically give up and get a real job seemed pretty crappy to me, even by Simon's standards. I think the timing was the issue. The kid's feeling low enough as it is, and Simon kicks him in the head. Not cool. And all this after the kid had to go on National TV with Donald Trump hair. Whose freakin' bright idea was that? I felt so bad for him I wanted to jump in a time machine and go back to Tuesday night and vote 500,000 times for him just to spite AI!

Speaking of unsettling things, How 'bout that 60's medley? I thought I was gonna upchuck a Nehru jacket. For one thing, they used the Amen Corner version of "Bend Me Shape Me" (the version that was a hit in the UK) instead of the AMERICAN Breed's version that went Top 5 over here. The whole thing was painful to watch and hear. Any former flower children watching probably applied today for gun permits. Yuck!

On to next week!!

I turned it off completely. It was terrible. To me, there is something sacred about some of those songs that they should not be sung by a gaggle of star-wannabes. They need to be heard through a good transistor radio.

What did you think of Paula's number? Lady G commented that she looked like she was trying to emulate Janet Jackson.

More like Janet emulated Paula when she was doing her most popular albums. Paula choreographed all of Janet's videos from the "Control" album, and danced in "Nasty."

It was cool that she dressed her age, so to speak, and it was cool to see Randy playing the bass for her. But since she obviously can't do some of the dance moves any more that made her famous, and she never could sing, I think this should be a one-time novelty deal.

Pro Tools and triple tracking are wondrous things. Paula's vocals always were thinner than Calista Flockhart's arms.
