I don't believe the phrase was all that well-known until the (excellent) documentary with the same name was released a few years ago. I suspect it was the documentary which brought the phrase to the attention of the question writers.

I think you're right, Esto; it must have been the documentary. I see that my library has a copy of this DVD, which I'll have to check out.

Before seeing it, though, I have to react with a little skepticism. The peaceful collapse of the Soviet empire from 1989 to 1991 was quite remarkable, but I find it hard to believe that the key element for the success of the revolution in Estonia was a shudder going through the Kremlim: "OMG! They're--they're singing!"

Did Peggy just set a record for the largest ATA result ever rejected by a contestant? She really psyched herself out on this one, just because she didn't recall that the Russians were actively working on a mission to Mars. What other choice could possibly require an isolation of 520 day? Riding a submarine to the bottom of the Marianas Trench???

Edited because there's a difference between adjectives and adverbs.

The film will make you believe it. It is very well done and has narration from Linda Hunt to boot.

Maybe she was afraid the answer might have been Royal Mail Ship. Maybe with the jumbled airdates this contestant might have been told about the "Royal Mail Ship" or even been in the green room at the time.

I'd ATA but be prepared to JTQ if the numbers weren't good.

For future reference Richard Branson, Virgin Records, Virgin Airlines etc. has just bought a submarine, the Virgin Oceanic, to travel to the bottom of the Marianas Trench

Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

I just received an e-mail from the makers of "The Singing Revolution." They are currently working on getting the film on the fall TV schedules:

Dear TSR Friends:

The Singing Revolution television broadcasts are finally here for the U.S.!

Public Broadcasting Stations around the U.S. have begun to announce their schedules, and starting July 26th through September airdates have been scheduled.

Check the list of stations for dates/times in your area on the TSR website, you can search by STATION or CITY: http://www.singingrevolution.com/cgi-lo ... enings.cgi

MORE STATIONS TO COME, this is just the beginning! Many stations do not finalize their schedules until a few weeks before broadcast, so if your local station is not listed yet, check back in a week. We'll update the list each Monday with all broadcast information.

After September, there will also be repeat broadcasts and we'll be posting those as well.

So please check the site to see when The Singing Revolution is playing in your area, share it with your friends, and we'll keep the updates coming!

Thank You!

My apologies, Esto. I did watch the DVD back in April and I meant to to post about it, but one thing or another distracted me (primarily my life entering an never-ending nightmare). But I want to tell you that after watching, I do believe.

So, a recommendation to other BBs: watch this documentary when it airs on PBS in your area!

I usually skip the transcripts so didn't see this.

There's no way the submarine shown could go to the bottom of the Marianas Tranch; not even 1000 feet.

Don't know why not. The convex canopy seems purpose built to withstand pressure extremes. And I am sure the technology has changed since the last time anybody, other than flounder or two, was down there some 50 years ago. Of course the window cracked on the Trieste on that trip so I hope the technology is better or he is going to look a lot like a flounder too!

But seems kind of useless. It is just built to make the 7 mile trip and come back again. Doesn't seem likely to be able to do much in the way of real research other than maybe get a reading or two and possibly film the trip. Seems more like an elaboarte stunt, not that that has stopped anybody before.

Virgin Oceanic is the name of his company: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virgin_Oceanic

Here's an article on the deep-diving sub. I have to wonder how they could have tested it to ensure it won't implode long before -37,000 feet.
