Interesting Bored Buddy Sighting

Maddie got to try her case last night for Mock Trial. She was working as a Defense Attorney and got to do the closing arguments, a direct and a cross.

When she walked into the room, she noticed a familiar face on the bench, presiding as judge. She confirmed his identity by looking at his name plaque. It was a bored buddy!

After the trial, when went up to hear comments, he told her that he recognized her name when it was presented to him on the roster.

I had already talked to Maddie's coach and told her that Maddie might encounter somebody that she knew.

She said that he would probably just note that he knew her when he saw the rosters, but wouldn't have to recuse himself.

He made her day by telling her that he was surprised that she was given the role that she was given in the trial as a Freshman, because usually it's reserved for the strongest person on the team.

What he didn't know was that Maddie's school has two teams because they are so strong. The Seniors and Juniors are on one team and the Sophmores and Freshman compete as a ghost team for experience. If they lose, it doesn't go against their school's record, but they can knock another team out of contention.

Last night Maddie's ghost team was playing one of the strongest teams in the field. She was nervous, but her coach told me that more than held her own.

The results haven't been posted yet.

Of course, Notebookboy has that date immediately to hand, even though that visit was back on the TUB, which has been sunk to a watery grave.

Was this practice or an actual competition?

In the actual competitions that I have judged, we went through the rosters of the schools, students and coaches, and noted where we knew (had a relationship) with someone. If there was such an instance, then judges would switch assignments.

I am surprised that RJS did not ask to switch, or was not asked to switch.

O.K. My mistake. I did not think that RJS and Maddie really knew each other. However, I thoguht that RJS had more than "passing acquintance" relatationship with Jeff and you (a trivia competition type of thing). There iwould have been a possible issue of being less critical or more favorable to the kid of a "friend".

I will concur that you want to give the closing argument to the best impromptu or extemporaneous speaker. An opening argument you can write ahead fo time. However, with a clsoing argument, you can have the rough outline/skeleton of what you want to say, but you have to adjust and re-write as facts arise or don't arise during witness testimony.

Maddie wrote the opening statement for her team, which she "gave" to another lawyer and wrote a closing as well. She added and deleted facts as necessary when actually performing her closing.

When she has been practicing at school, she hasn't been objecting when she should, basically she was afraid to do it. The other team came in screeching and being obnoxious (or so I was told by the coach) and Maddie was able to go head to head and wasn't afraid to raise a lot of objections. She told me that all her objections, save one, were sustained and that the only one that was overruled actually helped her team.

I still don't know how her team did. It would be a major coup for this team of Freshman and Sophmores to defeat the other team, but she thinks that it will be close.

I knew RJS a lot better and even happened to be one of his son's PACSs. If I ever get arrested on the O.C. and got him, he would probably have to recuse himself.
