Prayers requested...for FIL
fwh went to CA yesterday to be with his family to help out with his Dad during the rehab stint. Dad broke his hip 3 weeks ago, had surgery, and has been in the rehab facility til yesterday.
fwh, has been trying to get ahold of Dad's docs...been very difficult.
Did you know...that if you are in a rehab facilty medicare will not cover a shot of procrit (Dad needs 1/week). Well, he hasn't been getting the shots...so, last night they brought him to the ER to have a blood transfusion and admitted him since he has a large edema at the incision site. Surgeon has not seen Dad since surgery.
fwh, was getting NO info from his Mom, Sister or Niece. Dad was sitting in the rehab, and if fwh didn't arrive and take action, I don't want to think of what would have happened!
Dad's doc's are NOT working together to help him recover. fwh, is so upset. He trusted his Mom to be an advocate for Dad...she is totally out-of-the-loop!
Please keep my FIL Joseph in your prayers...so that his doctors will get on the ball, get his edema taken care of, encourage his hip to heal, and be able to return to his life.
Many thanks in advance!

You got 'em. It's a tough situation, and exhausting. Stay strong.

Has your FIL designated a medical power of attorney? After my dad passed away, we convinced my mom to get all of her ducks in a row. I hold medical POA for my mom. With the number of hospitalziations and medical twists-and-turns that she has taken in the last 5 years, it has been helpful with getting inforamtion from doctors, even if I was not there at the hospital. (Maybe the fact that they know that I am an attorney also might help.

My thoughts are with you, fw, and definitely agree with Appa. Sis and I both have one of these in our files, and it has been very useful in getting info on Mom's medical issues, including from long distance when necessary. IIRC, we got the form right at the hospital where Mom was incarcerated, er, admitted at the time, and had one of the nurses sign as witness.Appa23 wrote:Has your FIL designated a medical power of attorney? I just ordered chicken and an egg from Amazon. I'll let you know.

Dad had radiation treatment for Prostate cancer years ago, and therefore, he needs a boost with his blood count.MarleysGh0st wrote:Is the procrit something he had prescribed before the hip fracture or as a result of that?
Best wishes to fwh and his dad. That's a tough situation. And these are the family members you had the Christmas Eve dispute with, right, so they might not be forthcoming with any info they've learned?
Thanks everyone for your prayers, advice and suggestions...just told fwh, that he should get Medical Power of Attorney so there will be less communication problems. He agrees! The "family" is not very proactive in his medical treatment.
FIL looks better today, and is sitting up. This is good!

When my mom was in rehab after the biggest stroke, they took away all her meds except the ones the admitting doctor had prescribed. Some of these things, like coumadin to prevent blood clots like the one that probably caused the stroke, directly keep her alive. Some, like blood pressure meds, contribute mightily to keeping her alive. Some, like various anti-itch meds, were substituted by the rehab place, though not necessarily satisfactorily. But the keeping-alive meds were kept away from her for a couple days while the lab analyzed them "to see that they really were what they say they are". That's a couple of days during which a patient could die.
Obviously, the "next time" plans involve getting admitting doctors to write new prescriptions for all the necessary meds, even if it means paying through the nose at the rehab pharmacy.
But for essential services, like your fwh's dad's procrit shot, that rehab doesn't provide at all; why do they call it "rehab", then?
